In 1860, he was living in ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a segar apprentice. He was living with Martin Bincker and others. [source: 24]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, gray eyes, and light hair. [sources: 2, 3]

During the war

He also served in company C of the 21st Pennsylvania Infantry. [source: 7]

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 27 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr. He was a private in company A. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 8, 28]

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. [source: 15]

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia. [sources: 1, 3]

On 12 March 1864, he was reported under arrest. He probably returned from arrest on 21 April 1864. [sources: 5, 6]

On 1 August 1864, he was reported absent sick. [source: 12]

On 17 August 1864, he was sick in the division hospital. [source: 13]

After the war

He married Elizabeth [unknown family name]. She was born on 17 October 1843, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They had seven children, including these:

In 1870, he was living in the 17th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was an organ manufac[turer], and owned $300 in personal property. He was living with his wife Elizabeth, and children Mary, George, and Anna. [source: 14]

On 7 October 1871, his daughter Anna died, at 1743 Germantown Avenue, ward 19, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died of double pneumonia. On 9 October 1871, she was buried, in New Cathedral Cemetery. Her physician was Chas W Houghton, who had served in the 91st. [source: 27]

On 4 June 1880, his son George B Hebding died, of asthma. He died at, or was buried from, 345 Ann Street, 21st ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 6 June 1880, he was buried at New Cathedral Cemetery. [source: 26]

In 1880, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a brakeman for a railroad. He was living with his wife Elizabeth, his children Mary, Geo B, Ema, Charles, and Henry, and his mother-in-law Elizabeth Biddle. [source: 4]

On 10 December 1890, he successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 7, 11]

On 26 April 1895, he died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of cirrhosis. He was married, and was a driver. He died at (or was buried from) 2323 Garside Street, ward 29, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 29 April 1895, he was buried in the New Cathedral Cemetery, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1900, his wife Eliza was living with her daughter Emma and Emma's family, along with Eliza's son Harry. They were living at 2519 Ingersoll Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 22]

On 20 December 1908, Elizabeth Hebding died. at 2423 Sharswood Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died of pneumonia (bronchial), with heart weakness contributing. HEBDING.--On December 20, 1908, ELIZABETH, wife of the late Charles Hebding, aged 65 years. The relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral, on Wednesday morning at 8.30 o'clock, from the residence of her daughter, Mrs Eugene Kuhn, 2423 Sharswood Street. High mass at St Elizabeth's Church at 10 AM. Interment at New Cathedral Cemetery.
