Before the war

He was born on 5 June 1846, (8, 9 [June 1849]; 2 (18 in 1865), 8 [68 yrs 11 mos 2 days at death], 9 [50 in 1900], 10 [32 in 1880], 13 [69th year at death]). He was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania (2, 8, 9, 10 [England]). He was born to Richard Hill and [unknown] (8).

When he enlisted, he was a labo[rer] (2).

Description

He was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 13 February 1865 (1, 2, 3, 7). He was enlisted for one year, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Yerkes (2). He was mustered in as a private in company H, by Captain Yerkes (1, 2, 14).

The regiment reported him gained on 22 February 1865 (6).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3, 7). He was a private, in company H (14).

After the war

In 1877/78, he married Lillie [unknown family name] (9). In 1900, she had had 4 children, all of whom were alive (9).

In 1880, he was living at 2225 [sic] Rednar Street, ward 29, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Lillie and daughter Lizzie (10). He was a car driver (10).

In 1890, he was living at 2245 Redner Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 4). He was a driver (4).

On 17 August 1892, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (5, 7).

In 1900, he was living at 2558 Napa Street, 28th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Lillie, and children Elizabeth, Clara, William H, and Jennie [?] M (9). He was a brickmaker, and had been unemployed for one month in the previous year (9).

On 15 June 1908, he again applied for a pension (7).

He died on 7 May 1915, at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7, 8, 13). He died of heart disease (8). (He presumably died at work.) He was a grave digger (8). The informant on his death certificate was Lillian L Hill (presumably his wife) (8). He was buried on 10 May 1915, at Mt Peace Cemetery (8, 13). The funeral was held at 2558 [?] North Napa Street, his late residence (13).

On 25 May 1915, his widow, Lillie Hill, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (5, 7).

In 1920, his widow, Lillie Hill, was living at 2160 North Newkirk (?) Street, 28th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). She was living with her children Elizabeth, William, and Jennie (11).

In 1930, his widow, Lillie Hill, was living at 2712 French Street, 32nd ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). She was living with her children William and Jennie (12).
