Before the war

He was born on 1 April 1839, (8, 9; 3 (23 in 1861), 6 [27 in 1870], 7 [41 in 1880], 8 [61 in 1900], 9 [70 yrs 3 ms - dys at death]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 6, 7, 8, 9). He was born to Joseph Adam Hoffman and Eliza Hoofman (9).

When he was enlisted, he was a boat builder (3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair (3).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 2 September 1861 (1, 3). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr (3). He was a private in company A (1, 10).

He was discharged on 14 August 1862 (1, 3) or 15 August 1862 (2) on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 3). He was a private in company A (1, 2, 10).

He also served in company I of the 198th Pennsylvania Infantry (4, 5).

After the war

In 1868/69, he married Christianna [unknown family name] (8). In 1900, she had had five children, three of whom were still alive (8).

In 1870, he was living in the 25th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He was working at boat building (6). He was living with his wife Christine (6).

On 26 January 1880 he applied successfully for a pension (4).

In 1880, he was living at 4136 Paul Street, in the 23rd ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was a dyer (7). He was living with his wife Christiana, and children A Joseph, William, A Rose, and Margaret (7).

In 1900, he was living at 1625 Womrath Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). He was a combmaker (8). He was living with his wife Christianna and five other family members (8).

He applied again for a pension on 21 February 1907 (4).

He died at 3.15 PM on 1 July 1909, of paresis (duration 12 months) (9). He died at his residence, 1625 Womrath Street, ward 23, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was a comb maker (9). He was buried on 6 July 1909, at North Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9).

On 6 [?] July 1909 [?], Christianna Hoffman, his widow, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 5).
