Before the war

In 1860, he was living in Pine Grove Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylania. He was living with Henry and Eve Hubler (presumably his parents), and others (presumably siblings). He had attended school within the year. [source: 10]

When he enlisted, he was a laborer. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 3 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. [source: 2]

In 1916, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, brown eyes, and grey hair. [source: 13]

During the war

He was a substitute. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 23 or 25 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Pottsville, Pennsylvania, by Captain Bowen. He was mustered in as a private in company H. [sources: 1 (25 Mar), 2 (23 Mar), 5, (25 Mar), 7, 13 (23 May), 14]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He had served for four months. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 5, 7, 13, 14]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Pine Grove Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Henry and Eve Hubler (presumably hi parents), and with Philip (presumably his brother). He was not working. [source: 11]

On 29 August 1881, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 4, 5]

In 1890, he was living in Pine Grove, Schulkill County, Pennsylvania. [source: 3]

On 20 [? 26?] March 1907, he again applied for a pension. [source: 5]

On 13 November 1916, he was admitting to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He had deficient vision and hearing, a gunshot wound of the left middle finger, cardiac dystemper, marked arteriosclerosis, chronic rheumatism, and prostatic hypertrophy. He was a laborer, and was widowed. [sources: 7, 13]

On 4 December 1916, he was discharged from the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He was receiving a pension of $18 per month. [sources: 7, 13 (2 Dec)]

In 1920, he was living at 186 North Tulpehocken Street, Pine Grove Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his nephew Harry Barr, Harry's family, and his sister Caroline Hubler (Harry's mother). He was widowed, and not working. [source: 12]
