On 13 November 1916, he was admitting to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He had deficient vision and hearing, a gunshot wound of the left middle finger, cardiac dystemper, marked arteriosclerosis, chronic rheumatism, and prostatic hypertrophy. In 1920, he was living at 186 North Tulpehocken Street, Pine Grove Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his nephew Harry Barr, Harry's family, and his sister Caroline Hubler (Harry's mother). He was widowed, and not working. [source: 12]
