When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and black hair (2).

During the war

He was a substitute (1). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 18 March 1865 (1, 2). He was enlisted for one year, at Williamsport, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (2). He was a private in company C (1, 5).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1). He was a private, in company C (5).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Jenny, Marathon County, Wisconsin (3). He was living with Augusta Ives, whose age suggests she might be his daughter, but she was born in Prussia (3). He worked in a blacksmith shop, and owned $200 in real estate and $150 in personal property (3).

In 1880, he was living in Jenny, Lincoln County, Wisconsin (4). He was a laborer (4). He was divorced (4).
