Before the war

He was born in 1820/21 (4 (43 in 1864), 6 [51 in ?1885], 9 [54 in ?1888], 10 [54 in ?1888], 12 [55 in ?1890]). He was born in Pennsylvania (6, 9, 10, 12).

During the war

He was a recruit (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private, for three years, on 27 March 1864, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 4, 5 [Feb 64]). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Gregory, and mustered into service by Lieutenant Hilderburn (2). He was a private in company E (1, 2, 14).

He was wounded in the hand on 8 May 1864 at Laurel Hill, Virginia (1, 2, 4, 5, 11).

He was discharged, at US General Hospital, Alexandria, Virginia, on 5 June 1865, by War Department general order (1, 3, 4 [1 Jun 65], 5 [Feb 65], 8). He had served for fifteen months (6, 9, 10, 12). He was a private, in company E (14).

He also served as a carpenter in the US Navy (6). He had served for twenty-four months (6).

He also served in the US Marine Corps (9, 12). He served for 96 months (9, 10, 12).

After the war

On 27 October 1885, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (6). He had a wounded left hand, and was receiving a pension of $6 per month (6).

On 20 March 1886, he was discharged from the Northwest Branch of the National Soldiers Home (6).

On 27 March 1886, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (7, 13).

On 21 January 1888, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (9, 10, 12). He was present in the Southern Branch in 1889 (10). He was admitted from Pennsylvania (9, 10, 12). He had a gunshot wound in his left hand (9, 10). He was receiving a pension of $6 per month (9, 10).

He was discharged from the Southern Branch of the National Soldiers Home on 11 June 1888 (9).

In 1890, he was living at the National Soldiers Home, Southern Branch, in Elizabeth City County, Virginia (5, 12). He had had a gunshot wound to his left hand (5, 12). He was receiving a pension of $8 per month (12).

He died on 3 October 1890 (13).

On 10 October 1890, his widow, Elizabeth Jacobs, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (7, 13).
