Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 22 August 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff. He was a private in company A. [sources: 1, 3, 8]

On 4 February 1862, he was discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability, by order of General George B Clellan, at Camp Stanton. He was a private, in company A. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 8]

After the war

He married Mary D Wilhelms. She was born in December 1822, in Germany and immigrated in 1849. They apparently had 7 children. [sources: 10, 12, 13 (7 children, none living in 1900)]

On 9 October 1865, Maria Jauss, daughter of George and Mary Jauss, died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was 8 years old. She was buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery. [source: 7]

In 1870, he was living in the 13th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Mary (presumably his wife). He was a tailor. [source: 4]

In 1880, he was living at 2235 Lawrence Street, ward 19, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary. He was a tailor. [source: 6]

In 1900, he was living at 2235 North Lawrence Street, ward 19, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary D, and a boarder, Anna M Wilhelm. He was a tailor, and had not been unemployed in the previous year. He owned his house, and there was no mortgage on it. [source: 13]

On 12 January 1903, his wife, Mary D Jaus, died, at 2235 North Lawrence Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died of bronchitis. On 15 January 1903, she was buried, at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 11, 12]
