91st PA--Mahlon S Jones

Mahlon S Jones

Note on identification

RootsWeb WorldConnect has five gedcom's with a Mahlon S Jones, born 1846 or December 1848, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, to Henry and Rosanna (or Penninah?) Jones, married Elvina Rotenberger, with six children (Sarah (b. ca 1876), Clara (b. 3 Sep 1877), Lillie (b. Dec 1879), Cora (b. July 1881), Ira Henry (b. 31 Mar 1884), and William (b. 12 June 1889) (accessed 20 September 2010). This is clearly the Mahlon S Jones (1848-1930) who was buried in the Lansdale Cemetery, Lansdale, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania with Elvina R Jones (1848-1924) and Clara R Jones (1877-1966) (Find a grave memorial 37176555 (accessed 17 September 2010)).

Note that a Mahlon H Jones died on 29 September 1916 (unknown birthdate), and was buried in the Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton City, Virginia (Find a grave memorial 3085882, accessed 20 September 2010). This is presumably the Mahlon H Jones who was in the Southern Branch of the National Soldiers Home in 1900 (see 1900 US census, Virginia, Elizabeth City County, supervisor's district 2, enumeration district 8, microfilm series T623, film 1706, page 94 = 2 A handwritten). That Mahlon Jones was born in May 1845, in Pennsylvania, and was a carpenter, and I suspect he is the Philadelphia Mahlon Jones--if not, I have not located the Philadelphia Mahlon Jones in the 1900 census. (I have not found him in the 1910 US census.) That suggests the Philadelphia Mahlon Jones did serve in the Civil War. And according to the Pension index by regiment (available on Footnote), a Mahlon S Jones did serve in company P [?] of the 72nd Pennsylvania infantry (along with H 72 PA Infantry, P 3 and A 183 PA Infantry, and C 3 US Veteran Volunteer Infantry). (A Mahlon S Jones did also serve in company G, 2nd Battalion, US Engineers.) Perhaps examining those pension applications would provide some further information.

I have assumed that the Mahlon S Jones in Philadelphia is the one who enlisted in the 91st Pennsylvania, but that identification is based solely on their locations in 1860, and is uncertain.

Before the war

He claimed to be 18 years old when he enlisted in 1861 (3). He was actually born in 1844/45 (4 (15 in 1860), 5 [5 in 1850], 6 [24 in 1870], 7 [35 in 1880]). He was born in Pennsylvania (4, 5, 6, 7).

In 1850, he was living in ward 3, Spring Garden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was living with Edward and Sophia Jones (presumably his parents), with Catharine, Henry, John, and Jane Jones (presumably siblings), and with four other people (5). He had attended school within the year (5).

In 1860, he was living in ward 13, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4). He was living with Edward, Sophia, Jane, Kate, George, and Jacob Jones (4).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 September 1861 (1, 3). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Dye (3). He served as a private in company A (1, 8).

He was discharged on 12 October 1861, on writ of habeas corpus (issued by the Honorable Oswald Thompson, Philadelphia), because he was a minor (1, 3). He was a private in company A (8).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with Edward and Sophia Jones, and with Kate Williamson and her family, and with George, Walter, and Jane Jones (6). He was a carter (6).

Ih 1880, he was living at 1311 Mervine Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Harriet, his brother George, and his brother-in-law William Gorges (7). He was a furniture car driver (7).
