Sylvester Jordan

Before the war

He was born in August 1847 or on 11 October 1847, to Jacob Bloom Jordan and Elizabeth Jane Whitehill, in Highland, Clarion County, Pennsylvania (8 [11 Oct 1847], 9 [Aug 1847; alt birth 11 Oct 1847], 14 [Aug 1847]). He was born in Clarion [County], Pennsylvania (4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17). He was 18 years old when he was enlisted (4, 5, 10 [2 in 1850], 11 [12 in 1860], 13 [25 in 1870], 14 [31 in 1880], 15 [52 in 1900], 16 [63 in 1910], 17 [71 in 1920]).

In 1850, he was living in Helen, Clarion County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his Jacob and Eliza Jordan, along with other people (10).

In 1860, he was living in Hellen Township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with Jacob and Dianna Jourdan (11).

When he enlisted, he was a labor[er] (4, 5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (4, 5).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 31 March 1864 (or possibly 31 March 1863) in the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry (1 [31 Mar 63], 4 [31 Mar 64], 5 [31 Mar 64], 9 [31 Mar 1864], 18 [31 Mar 64]). He was enlisted for three years, at Alleghany, Pennsylvania, by Captain Kirker or Kusker (4, 5).

On 12 May 1864, he was shot in the arm, and lost the use of his left arm (9). He was treated in the division hospital, then in Judiciary Square Hospital, Washington DC, and finally in Satterlee Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9).

He was transferred on 20 July 1864 from company M of the 62nd Pennsylvania (18 [discharged 20 July], 21, 23). On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G (2). On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company (3). He was then absent, as a private (3). He was a private in company K (1, 21, 22, 23).

On 30 April 1865, he was reported absent sick (19). He was still absent sick, in Pittsburgh Hospital, in June 1865 (20).

He was absent, sick, when the regiment mustered out (1).

He was discharged on 24 July 1865 (9). He was a private, in company K (22, 23).

After the war

On 26 July 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (6, 18).

In 1870, he was living in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (12). He was an engineer (12). He was living with his brother Jacob and other people (12).

On 16 March 1871, he married Nancy Ellen Anderson, in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia (8, 9). They had six children (8):

In 1880, he was living in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (13). He was a laborer (13). He was living with his wife Nancy, and children Harry, Maggie, Jessie, Charles, and Kline (13).

In 1890, he was living in Perry, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (7).

In 1900, he was living in Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (14). He was a day laborer, and had been out of work six months in the previous year (14). He was living with his wife Nancy, children Charles and Kline, father-in-law, brother, and a niece (14).

In 1910, he was living in East Brady Borough, Clarion County, Pennsylvania (15). He was living with his wife Nancy (15). He was not working (15).

In 1920, he was living in East Brady Borough, Clarion County, Pennsylvania (16). He was living with his wife Nancy (16). He was a tax collector (16).

He died on 4 April 1920, in East Brady, Clarion County, Pennsylvania (8, 9, 18). He was buried in Brady's Bend Cemetery, Brady's Bend, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (9).

On 23 April 1920, his widow, Nancy E Jordan, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 18).

In 1930, his widow, Nancy E Jordan, was living in Aillville [?] Village, Perry Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (17). She owned the house, which was worth $500 (17). She was living with her sister, Mary Elder (17).

His widow, Nancy Ellen Jordan, died on 11 November 1936, in East Brady, Clarion County, Pennsylvania (9). She was buried in Brady's Bend Cemetery, Brady's Bend, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (9).
