He was born on 14 February 1831, in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, to John Keith and Margaret Donaldson. In 1850, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He was living with John and Margaret Keith (presumably his parents), and with James, Lewis, Peter, and Mary (presumably his siblings), along with Hetty Brode. He was a labor[er], and had attended school within the year. [source: 12]

On 1 March 1856, he married Mary W Russell, in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. She was born in May 1835, in Pennsylvania. They had four known children (three of whom were alive in 1900), including:

In 1860, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Mary Keith (presumably his wife), William Keith (presumably their child), and Mary and Peter Keith (presumably other relatives). When he enlisted, he was 6 feet tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 15 March 1865 He was enlisted for one year, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lloyd. He was mustered in as a private, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. He reported for duty on 15 March 1865. His service was credited to the sixteenth congressional district. After the war

In 1870, he was living in Lincoln Township, Huntgindon County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary, children William, Mary, and Harriet, and with Jerome Fox. He was a farmer, and owned $4,500 in real estate and $1,102 in personal property. [source: 13]

In 1880, he was living in Lincoln Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary, children William, Mary, and Harriet, granddaughter Ida B Moyer, and with Benjamin Moyer. He was a farmer. [source: 14]

In 1890, he was living in Martinsburg or Woodbury Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (post office Curryville). He suffered from chronic diarrhea and neuralgia. [source: 7]

In 1900, he was living in Martinsburg Borough, Blair County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Mary and daughter Harriet. He was a farmer, and had not been unemployed in the previous year. [source: 15]

In 1910, his widow, Mary Keith was living in Martinsburg, Blair County, Pennsylvania. She was living with her daughter Harriet Keith. [source: 16]
