91st PA--George Kitchenman

George Kitchenman

Before the war

He was born on 14 June 1823, in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England, to Richard Kitchenman and Phoebe Foster. [sources: date: 9. place: 9. parents: 9]

He apparently married Lavinia [unknown family name]. She was born in 1829/30, in Ireland. They apparently had at least one child:

[source: 13]

In 1850, he was living in ward 7, Spring Garden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Lavinia (presumably his wife), and with Edward (presumably their son). [source: 13]

Perhaps he is the George Kitchinman, dyer, living at Fairmount above Morris Streets, Philadelphia, in 1851. [source: 11]

Perhaps he is the George Kitchinman, dyer, living at Fairmount above Spring Garden Streets, Philadelphia, in 1855 to 1857. John Kitchinman, laborer, was also living there. [source: 11]

Levina Kitchenman, wife of George Kitchenman, died on 30 April 1857. His residence was 25th street, between Spring Garden and Centre. [source: 12]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private on 14 November 1862 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company A. [sources: 1, 7, 14]

He fought at the battle of Gettysburg. [source: 3]

On 2 July 1863, he was missing in action. He was dropped from the rolls on 9 July 1863, by order of Brigadier General Garrard. On the next consolidated morning report, dated 28 July 1863, he was reported as having been dropped because he was missing in the campaign. He was a private, in company A. [sources: 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 14]

On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Philadelphia and able to rejoin the regiment, and requested his return (2). Sinex claimed that Kitchenman was "reported to be working at his trade in a dye house". [source: 2]

After the war

Perhaps he is the George Kitchinman, dyer, living at 2217 Hamilton Street, Philadelphia, in 1864. [source: 11]

Perhaps he is the George Kitchinman, dyer, living at 2024 North Third Street, Philadelphia, in 1876-1877. Thomas Kitchenman was living there, and William Kitchenman was living at 2026 North Third Street. [source: 11]

He is probably the George Kitchenman who died on 31 December 1889, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of chronic diarrhea. He died at, or was buried from, 2024 North 3rd Street, 19th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which was the house of his brother Thomas Kitchenman. He was 67 years old, and was born in England. He was married, and was a dyer. He was buried on 3 January 1890, at Mt Peace Cemetery. [sources: 8, 10]

the FamilySearch index (accessed 24 March 2013) has 12 Kitchenman entries in 3 households in Philadelphia (and 0 Kitcherman, and 5 apparently irrelevant Kitchman's (Augustus, Richd, Thos, Harry, Caroline), and no additional Kitchingman) (and Ancestry's index [accessed 24 Mar 13] added no more entries):
(1) Wm Kitchenman (23, dyer, b. England), with Ellen (20, b. PA), Richard (2, b. PA), and Wm (4/12, b. PA), (PA, Philadelphia, ward 16, E division, microfilm series M653, film 1166, page 189 = 191 handwritten FamilySearch)
note that two households later (1278/1474), Stephen Green (Gentm) may match 'Green Stephen, brickmaker, 127 Van Horn' (Sherman's directory, p.374)
and in 1278/1474, Chas Edward, H Carpenter, matches 'Edwards Charles W., carpenter, 127 Van Horn' (Sherman's directory, p.271)
(2) James Kitchenman [?] (35, dyer, b. England, $8000 in real estate and $400 in personal property), with Margaret (31, b. Ireland), Mary (7, b. PA), Elisabeth (5, b. PA), Clara (4, b. PA), Margaret (3/12, b. PA), and Robert Crawford (18, dyer, b. PA) (PA, Philadelphia, ward 17, microfilm series M653, film 1167, page 1036 = 250 handwritten FamilySearch)
(3) James Kitchengmer [?] (50, b. England, C Weaver, $15000 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property), with Abbe Kitchengmer [?] (40, b. NJ), and Richard Brown (10, b. PA) (PA, Philadelphia, ward 16, E division, microfilm series M653, film 1166, page 32 = 32 handwritten FamilySearch)
#1 is William Kitcherman, dyer, r 123 Vanhorn in the 1861 directory
#2 is James Kitchenman, dyer, 332 Thompson in the 1861 directory
#3 is James Kitchingman, carpetweaver, 70 Laurel in the 1861 directory
that leaves four entries from the directory:
(A) James Kitchenman painter, 1708 N 6th
see Biddle's 1861 p.5: 'Addis John C., jr., clerk, 47 S 3d, h 1704 N 6th' [no obvious entry in FamilySearch's 1860 census index]
(B) John Kitchenman hotel N E 25th & Spring Garden
(C) John Kitchenman dispatcher American above Oxford
(D) William Kitchenman tobacconist, 1204 Pine
see Biddle's 1861 page 1222: Jane Grier, trimmings and dry goods, 1200 Pine; perhaps cf. ward 7, roll 1157, page 195 = 195 handwritten: Jane Grier 45 b. Scotland dry goods store (no one who could be William Kitchenman on that page or the previous page, but I didn't check whether this was Pine Street)

LDS and HeritageQuest indices (accessed 1 Dec 2009)
Ancestry's index found 82 Kitchenman entries in the two enumerations (accessed 24 March 2013; searched for Kitchenman resident in Philadelphia)
CANDIDATE 1: a Geo Kitchenman 40 is present at Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, ward 19, district 60, microfilm series M593, film 1433, page 507 recto = 47 handwritten (2nd enumeration); Eliza K 198 [?] is also living there
The entries are labeled 'Adams St South Side', and the first entry in the household is Barbara Stadtler who is presumably 'Stadler Barbara, wid John, weaver, h 517 Adams' (Gopsill's p.1336)
for additional confirmation, see the next page: 515, James Lilly 45; cf. Gopsill's p.877: 'Lilley James P., beamer, h 515 Adams'
and 511, Isabella Brinton 44, cf. Gopsill's p.266: 'Brinton Isabella, wid William, h 511 Adams'
and 511, John Wright 23, cf. Gopsill's p.1523: 'Wright John, weaver, h 511 Adams'
CANDIDATE 2: George Kitchman (50, carpet weaver, born England) is present at Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, ward 19, district 60, microfilm series M593, film 1433, page 507 recto = 47 handwritten
I have not found another George Kitchman born in England in Philadelphia in the census records
he seems to be living at 581 E Cumberland:
his household (1404/1420 (on the previous page)) is headed by Edward and Fanny Welch hotel; cf. 'Welsh Edward F., liquors, 581 E Cumberland' and 'Welsh Fanny, boarding, 581 E Cumberland' (Gopsill's p.1468; p.1467 has no Edward Welch)
note that Gopsill's p.653 has 'Halpin James, driver, h 581 E Cumberland', but the census entry does not include a James Halpin
household/family 1406/1423 headed by Andrew Meng [?] retired mcht; cf. 'Meng Andrew (Meng & Gerlach), h 577 E Cumberland' [Meng & Gerlach crucibles] (Gopsill's p.1013)
1408/1424 is headed by Samuel Horner no occcupation, with Saml Horner carpet mnfr and Robert Horner carpet mnfr; cf. 'Horner Robert (R. Horner Bro. & Co.), h 575 E Cumberland' and 'Horner R., Bro. & Co. (Robert & Samuel Horner & James Kitchenman), carpet mfrs, Amber c Letterly' (Gopsill's p.736)
