Before the war

He was born in 1829/30 or 1835/36, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania [sources: date: 8 (28 in 1864), 9 (30), 10 (29), 17 (30 in 1860), 18 (33! in 1870), 20 (53 in 1884)). place: 8, 10, 17 (Maryland), 18 (Scotland)]

He married Catherine Elizabeth Gohn. She was born in 1833, in Kansas. They apparently had these children:

In 1860, he was living in Columbia Borough, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Catharine (presumably his wife), and George and James (presumably their children). He was a stone cutter, and owned $500 in real estate. [source: 17]

When he enlisted, he was a marble cutter. [sources: 8, 10]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, gray eyes, and light hair. [sources: 8, 10 (5'8", light complexion, gray eyes, dark hair)]

During the war

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer (!). He was a private, in company B. [sources: 1, 9, 19]

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 19 March 1864, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory. He was mustered by Lieutenant Langdon or Lieutenant Snyder. He was due $400 bounty, and had received $60 bounty and one month's pay ($13) in advance. [sources: 1, 8, 9 (as 1st sgt!), 10]

He was reported gained on 21 April 1864. [source: 12]

He was detailed for duty in the division hospital on 8 June 1864. On 15 July 1864, he was returned to duty from hospital. [sources: 2, 14]

He was promoted to corporal on 24 September 1864. [sources: 3, 15]

He was wounded, perhaps on 30 September 1864, perhaps near Peeble's Farm. [source: 10 (30 Sep 65, near Pepans' [?] Farm)]

On 7 January 1865, he was promoted to sergeant, perhaps effective 1 January 1865. [source: 4]

On 15 March 1865, he was promoted to first sergeant, effective 1 March 1865. [sources: 5, 7, 10]

On 22 May 1865, he went on a furlough, which expired on 6 June 1865. He returned on 9 June [source: 6]

He was "to be charged"--perhaps for lost equipment, when the regiment mustered out. [source: 11]

On 10 July 1865, he mustered out, with his company. He was first sergeant of company B. [sources: 1, 9, 19]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Black Hawk Township, Rock Island County, Illinois. He was living with Catherine (presumably his wife), George, James, Robert, Annie, and Willie (presumably their children). He was a stone cutter, and owned $1,000 [?] in real estate, and $200 in personal property. [source: 18]

On 13 November 1871, he successfully applied for a pension. [sources: 13, 16]

On 5 March 1884, he died. He was buried in Abilene Cemetery, Abilene, Dickinson County, Kansas. [source: 20]

On 25 March 1884, Catharine E Knox, his widow, successfully applied from Kansas for a pension. [sources: 13, 16]

In 1928, his widow, Catherine E Knox, died, in Kansas. She was buried in the Abilene Cemetery, Abilene, Dickinson County, Kansas. [sources: 21, 22]
