James Knox

Before the war

He was born in 1826/27 (2 (34 in 1861), 6 [30 in 1860]). He was born in Juniata, Pennsylvania (2, 6).

In 1860, he was living in Tuscarora Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with Catherine Knox (presumably his wife), and with Amanda and Sarah Lenox Zimmerman (6). He was a laborer, and owned $150 in real estate and $200 in personal property (6).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted (1). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 24 September 1864 (1) or 27 September 1864 (2, 3). He was enlisted for one year, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (2, 3). His enlistment was credited to the 14th Congressional District (2, 3). He was a private in company C (1, 8).

He was wounded on 1 April 1865 (1).

He died of wounds received in action (1). He was a private, in company C (8).

After the war

On 26 June 1865, his widow, Catharine Knox, successfully applied for a pension, under the act of 14 July 1862 (4, 5, 7). Her application was approved, with the certificate dated 12 September 1866, retroactive to 2 April 1865 (7). The pension certificate was sent to her, in East Waterford, [Tuscarora Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania (7). She initially received $8 per month.

A later pension certificate, widow's certificate 382,289, is also relevant.
