He was born in April 1851 (12; 2 (17 in 1865, 5 [about 72 at death], 7 [23 in 1870], 8 [60 in 1910], 11 [3 in 1850], 12 [49 in 1900]). He was born in Irishtown, Adams County, Pennsylvania (5, 7, 8, 12). He was born to Henry J Kuhn and Mary Ann Weirick (5, 14).

In 1850, he was living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with Henry and Mary Kuhn (presumably his parents), and with George, Amelia, Jerome, and William Kuhn (presumably his siblings) (11).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 2). He was mustered into service as a private on 23 March 1865 at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 10). He was a private in company F (1, 15, 16).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 2, 10). He was a private in company F (15, 16).

According to the pension index card, he also served in company 113 battalion 2, veterans' reserve corps (3, 10). But the index to the compiled service records doesn't mention that (16).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his parents Henry and Mary Kuhn, and with Lewis, Amelia, Frank, and William Kuhn (7). He seems to have been a stone mason (7).

In 1873/75, he married Sadie Cole (4, 8, 12). In 1900 and 1910, she had had 5 children, 3 of whom were alive (8, 12).

On 20 May 1885, he applied successfully for a pension (3, 13).

They moved to Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, about 1886 (4, 5).

In 1900, he was living at 864 North Sixth Street, 13th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his son Louis and Louis's wife Maggie, with his wife Sarah, and his chilren John and Nellie (12). He was a bricklayer (12).

In 1910, he was living at 854 Chelten Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Sarah and children John and Nellie (8). He was a timekeeper for the city (8).

He had "a stroke of paralysis" about 1912 (4, 5).

He died in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, 4 May 1916, of effects of his paralysis (4, 5, 13). The funeral was held in Philadelphia on 13 May 1916 [possibly 6 May] (4). He was a mason (4, 5). He was buried in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5).

On 19 May 1916, his widow, Sarah E Kuhn, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (3, 10).

In 1920, his widow, Sarah Kuhn, was living at 854 Chelten Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). She was living with her son John, her daughter Nellie, and Nellie's family (9).

In 1930, his widow, Sarah E Kuhn, was living at 854 Chelten Avenue, ward 22, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). She was living with her daughter Nellie and Nellie's family (13).
