91st PA: John M Langabartle

John M Langabartle

Before the war

He was born on 24 December 1840, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, apparently to Isaac Langebartel and Rebecca Markley. [sources: date: 5, 6; 3 (21 in 1861, but possibly discharged as a minor), 7 (10 in 1850), 8 (19 in 1860), 9 (30 in 1870), 10 (36 in 1880), 11 (Jan 1846!), 12 (70 in 1910). place: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. parents: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]

In 1850, he may be the John Langabartle living in ward 5, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That John was living with Isaac and Rebecca Langabartle (his parents), and with Emma, Josephine, and Amanda Langabartle (presumably siblings), and Catheren Preston. He had attended school within the year. [source: 7]

In 1860, he may be the John Langabartel living in ward 16, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That John was living with J and Rebecca Langabartel (his parents), and with Emma, Amanda, and Ella Langabartel (presumably siblings). He was a stone cutter. [source: 8]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 20 August 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr. He was a private in company A. [sources: 1, 3, 4, 15, 16]

On 7 October 1861, he was discharged on writ of habeas corpus (issued by the Honorable James R Sadlow, of Philadelphia), because of disability or because he was a minor. He was a private, in company A [sources: 1 (disability), 2 (disability), 3 (minor), 4, 15, 16]

After the war

In 1870, he may be the John Langbartel living in ward 13, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That John was living with Isaac (his father), with Amanda and Ella (presumably his siblings), and with Emma Hane (presumably his sister) and her family, along with a servant. He was apparently not working. [source: 9]

In 1880, he may be the John Langebartel living at 788 Lehigh Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a boarder, with Lawrence Horn. He was apparently not working. [source: 10]

In 1900, he may be the John M Langebartel living at 6616 Woodland Avenue, ward 40, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Anna M Horn, apparently his sister. He was not working ("gentleman"). [source: 11]

In 1910, he may be the John M Langebartle living at 6010 Kingsessing, ward 40, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That John was living with (and uncle of) Jensimin [?] H Drake. He was not working. [source: 12]

On 26 February 1911, he apparently died, at 6010 Kingsessing Avenue, ward 40, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of uraemic poisoning (2 days duration), with hypostatic congestion of lungs contibuting (1 day duration). On 2 March 1911, he was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Company for Insurance on Lives and Granting Annuities was his trustee under his father's will, and was the administrator of his will. [sources: 5, 6, 13, 14]

Note on identification

I'm pretty confident that the censuses and death records (entries 5 through 14 below) are all of the same person. I am not as confident that he is the John M Langabartle who enlisted in the 91st, but I have not found any other candidates. Based on most of the census records, he was not a minor--but perhaps whatever insanity the 1880 census mentions was enough to convince the judge he was not capable of consenting to enlist.
