91st PA: David G Lentz

David G Lentz

Before the war

He was born in 1842/43 (2 (18 in 1861), 9, 13 [25 at death in 1868], 14 [17 in 1860], 15 [7 in 1850]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 13, 14, 15).

In 1850, he was living in Moyamensing, ward 5, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was living with John and Louisa (presumably his parents) and with others (15).

In 1860, he was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with John and Louisa Lentz (presumably his parents), and with others (14). He was a clerk (14).

When he enlisted, he was a clerk (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service for three years on 20 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 9, 12). He was enlisted by Captain Lentz, and mustered into service by Colonel Reiff (2). He was a private, in company E (1, 16).

His (probable) father, John Lentz, also served in the 91st (see 14).

He fought in the battle of Gettysburg (4).

He was sent to a general hospital on 4 November 1863 (8).

On 22 November 1863, Henry Mathes (90th PA, formerly E 91st PA) wrote his mother that he was 'sorry to hear of the sickness of David Lentz' and hoped 'he may be restored to health soon again' (17).

On 1 March 1864, Colonel Gregory detached him to collect conscripts, at Philadelphia (5). On 27 April 1864, Sinex reported that he had been relieved from Camp Cadwalader, but had not yet reported to the regiment (6).

He mustered out on 6 September 1864, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when his term expired (1, 2, 3, 9, 10, 12). He was a private, in company E (16).

After the war

On 13 March 1867, he applied for a pension, apparently unsuccessfully (11, 12).

He died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 5 July 1868, of pulmonary phthisis (13). He was single (13). He died at, or was buried from, 4th and Locust Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was buried at Lafayette [?] Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13).
