Before the war

He was born on 21 August 1831 (7, 14; 3 (30 in 1861), 11 (18 in 1850), 12 (38 in 1870), 13 (48 in 1880), 14 (70 (sic) in 1900)). He was born in Nether Providence, Delaware (3, 7 [Lower Providence Township, Delaware Cty, PA], 12, 13, 14). He was born to Cyrus Levis and Julia Ann Elton (7).

In 1850, he was living in Nether Providence, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his father Cyrus Lewis (11). They were both clerks (11).

He finished his education at Pine Grove Academy, West Chester, Pennsylvania (7).

When he enlisted, he was a clerk (3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and dark brown hair (3).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 9 September 1861 (1, 3, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain McAuther (3). He was a private in company G (1, 15).

He was discharged on 23 April 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability, at Indiana Hospital, Washington DC (1, 2, 3, 4). He was discharged because of "neuralgia of heart" (4). He was a private, in company G (15).

After the war

On 7 January 1863, he married Rebecca Lewis Worrell (7, 10, 14). They were married by A Atwood (10). They had six children, five of whom were alive in 1900 (7, 14):

In 1870, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Rebecca, and their children Sarah, William, Julia, and Dehaven (12). He was a paper hanger, and owned $300 in personal property (12).

In 1880, he was living at 665 42nd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife Rebecca, and their children Sarah, William, Julia, Dehaven, and Emmor (13). He was a paper hanger (13).

In 1890, he was living at 1836 South Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 5). He was in real estate (5). He had "neuralgia of heart" (4).

On 2 July 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 16).

In 1900, he was living at 816 South Fifteenth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with his wife Rebecca, and their children Virginia, William, Julia, DeHaven, and Emmor (14). He was retired (14).

About 1911, he was living at 808 South Fifteenth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7).

He died on 18 November 1902 (6 [18 Nov 1912 [sic], 8 [18 Nov 1902]). The funeral was held on Friday from his residence, 816 South Fifteenth Street (8).

On 25 November 1902, his widow, Rebecca L Levis, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 16).

On 29 September 1912, his widow, Rebecca Levis, died (9). The funeral was held at her residence, in White Hill, New Jersey (9). She was buried in Bordentown, New Jersey (9).
