William Lowery

Before the war

He was born in 1816/17 (2 (44 in 1861), 7 [58 in ?1874], 8 [69 in 1880], 9 [67 in ?1874 or ?1884]). He was born in Manchester, England (2, 7, 8, 9).

When he enlisted, he was a spinster (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service for three years in company E on 24 August 1861, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania (1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14). He was enlisted by Captain Lentz, and mustered into service by Colonel Reiff (2).

He was discharged on 7 June 1863, at Washington, DC, on surgeon's certificate of disability, because he was unfit for duty (1, 2, 3, 10). He had served for twenty-two months (7, 9). He was a private, in company E (11, 12, 13, 14).

According to the regimental records, he was at Camp Convalescent, Alexandria, Virginia, on 8 September 1863, when Lieutenant Colonel Sinex asked for his return (5).

After the war

He successfully applied for a pension on 16 January 1874 (4, 10).

On 23 September 1874, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (7). He had a hernia, and was receiving a pension of $8 per month (7, 9).

He was present at the Central Branch of the Soldiers Home in 1880 (7, 8). He was a mule spinner [?], and had been out of work for twelve months in the previous year (8). He was widowed (8).

He died on 28 December 1883, at the Central Branch of the National Military Home (9).

In 1883 or 1884, the Central Branch (in Ohio) of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers granted an application by his brother William J Lowry for William Lowery's effects (6).
