Asher Blunt Manning

Before the war

He was born on 22 August 1823 (6, 11; 3 (41 in 1864), 7 (26 in 1850), 8 (35 in 1860), 9 (47 in 1870), 10 (59 in 1880), 11 (76 in 1900)). He was born in Rutland County, Vermont (3, 6, 7, 8 (NY), 9, 10 (NY), 11). He was born to Charles Manning and Arcena Blount (6).

He married Caroline M Howe about 1843 (6). They had seven children (6):

In 1850, he was living in Chatham Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (7). He was a farmer, and owned $700 in real estate (7). He was living with his wife Caroline, and their children Darwin, and Joseph, and his parents Charles and Arsena, and his brother (?) Henry (7).

In 1860, he was living in Chatham Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (8). He was a farm laborer, and owned $150 in personal property (8). He was living with his wife Caroline, and their children Darwin, Joseph, George, James, Emily and Squire (8).

His wife Caroline died in 1861 (6).

He married Lucy A Beardsley in 1862 (6, 11). They had eight children (6, 11 [9 children, 6 alive in 1900], 12 [12 children, 6 alive in 1910]):

When he enlisted, he was a shoemaker (3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (3).

During the war

He was drafted in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (1, 3). He was mustered into service on 1 June 1864 (1). He enlisted for one year (3). He was a private in company G (1, 15).

He deserted in Centre County, Pennsylvania (3).

He was arrested on 1 September 1864 (3). The person who arrested him received $30 as a reward (3).

He deserted (apparently for a second time) on 27 October 1864 (4). He was reported regained from desertion on 30 November 1864 (5).

On 1 December 1864, he was returned to duty in his company (2). He had to forfeit all pay for the time he was absent without leave, and to do police duty around the camp for one month, in addition to his other duties (2).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1). He was a private, in company G (15).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (9). He was a stone mason, and owned $200 in personal property (9). He was living with his wife Lucy, and his children George, James, Squire, Nelson, Lester, and Melissa (9).

In 1880, he was living in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (10). He was a stone mason (10). He was living with his wife Lucy, and children Lester, Melissa, Clara, Ada, and Olive (10).

On 10 April 1888, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (14, 16).

In 1890, he was living in Noyes or Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (mailing address Hammersley Fork) (13).

In 1900, he was living in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (11). He was a farmer (11). He was living with his wife Lucy and son Silas (11).

He died on 29 May 1909 (6, 14).

On 7 August 1909, his widow, Lucy A Manning, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (14, 16).

In 1910, his widow, Lucy Manning, was living in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (12). She was living with her son Silas and two boarders (12).
