When he enlisted, he was a shoemaker (3).
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (3).
He was drafted in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (1, 3). He was mustered into service on 1 June 1864 (1). He enlisted for one year (3). He was a private in company G (1, 15).
He deserted in Centre County, Pennsylvania (3).
He was arrested on 1 September 1864 (3). The person who arrested him received $30 as a reward (3).
He deserted (apparently for a second time) on 27 October 1864 (4). He was reported regained from desertion on 30 November 1864 (5).
On 1 December 1864, he was returned to duty in his company (2). He had to forfeit all pay for the time he was absent without leave, and to do police duty around the camp for one month, in addition to his other duties (2).
He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1). He was a private, in company G (15).
In 1870, he was living in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (9). He was a stone mason, and owned $200 in personal property (9). He was living with his wife Lucy, and his children George, James, Squire, Nelson, Lester, and Melissa (9).
In 1880, he was living in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (10). He was a stone mason (10). He was living with his wife Lucy, and children Lester, Melissa, Clara, Ada, and Olive (10).
On 10 April 1888, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (14, 16).
In 1890, he was living in Noyes or Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (mailing address Hammersley Fork) (13).
In 1900, he was living in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (11). He was a farmer (11). He was living with his wife Lucy and son Silas (11).
He died on 29 May 1909 (6, 14).
On 7 August 1909, his widow, Lucy A Manning, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (14, 16).
In 1910, his widow, Lucy Manning, was living in Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania (12). She was living with her son Silas and two boarders (12).
