John Markley

Before the war

He was born in 1832/33 (4 (30 in 1863), 9 (24 in 1860), 10 (32 in 1870)). He was born in Pennsylvania (4, 9, 10).

He marred Barbara Swarr (8). They had three children (8). (The Ellen who was living with them in 1860 may be a fourth child.)

In 1860, he was living in Petersburg, East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County (9). He was living with his wife Barbara and child Ellen (9). He was a hotel keeper, who owned $500 in personal property (9).

When he enlisted, he was a weaver (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light brown [?] hair (4).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 5). He enlisted and was mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 15 July 1863 (1, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Lancaster, Pennsylvania (4). His enlistment was credited to the 9th congressional district (4). He was in company H of the 118th Pennsylvania (5).

He was captured at Cold Harbor, Virginia, on 2 June 1864 (5).

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania (1, 5). He was a private in company B of the 91st (1, 13).

He may have been charged for a lost cartridge box, cap box, and cross belt, perhaps when the regiment mustered out (3).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1). He was a private, in company B (13).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Barbara, and children Annie, Hiram, and Lizzie (10). He was a laborer, and owned $200 in personal property (10).

He died on 24 [?] October 1875 (7).

In 1880, his widow Barbara was living in Petersburg, East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (11). She was living with her daughters Anna and Lizzie, and her mother Susan Swarr (and brother? Jefferson) (11).

On 16 April 1884, Barbara Markley, his widow, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (2, 7).

In 1890, his widow, Barbara, was living in East Hempfield, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (post office East Petersburg) (6).

In 1900, his widow Barbara was living in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, with her daughter Lizzie and Lizzie's family (12). She had had four children, two of whom were alive (12).
