He was born in 1831/32, in Montgomery [County], Pennsylvania. [sources: date: 9 (29 in 1861), 10 (29 in 1861), 14 (43 at death in 1873), 16 (43 in 1873), 25 (30 in 1870), 30 (ca 1833), 31 (29 in 1861). place: 9, 10, 14 (Philadelphia PA), 24, 25, 30, 31]
In 1860, he may be the Thomas Marpel living with Mary and Henry (along with Caroline and Elizabeth Staton) in ward 20, Philadelphia Pennsylvania. If so, he was a day laborer. [source: 24]
When he enlisted, he was a brass turner. [sources: 10, 31]
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair. [sources: 9, 10, 31]
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 3 October 1861. He was enrolled for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner. He was mustered in as a private in company K, by Lieutenant Pierce, US. [sources: 1, 9, 10, 31, 32 (corp)]
He was promoted to corporal on 3 December 1861. [source: 7]
He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was then a corporal. [source: 12]
On 29 August 1863, he was detailed to work with conscripts. [sources: 2, 4]
On 23 September 1863, he returned to duty. [source: 5]
On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist. On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave [sources: 2, 6, 8]
He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. [source: 1]
He was discharged, as a corporal, on 21 October 1864 on surgeon's certificate, and because his term had expired. He was a corporal, in company K. His left foot had been amputated because of the wounds he received at Petersburg. He had been paid through 31 August 1864. He had received $19.71 advanced for clothing, and had not received any bounty. His discharge certificate was signed by the surgeon in charge of South Street Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 1, 11 (on expiration of term), 31 (surgeon's certificate and expiration of term), 32]
On 4 November 1864, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 13, 15]
He married Mary Steton. She was born in 1842/43, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They apparently had at least six children:
[sources: 22, 25, 26, 27, 28]
In 1869, he was living at rear 1219 Ogden Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 28]
In 1870, he was living in ward 14, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his (presumed) wife Mary, and (presumed) children Harry C, Thomas J, Samuel, and Mary (born in May). He was living at number 7, rear 1219 Ogden Street, ward 14, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a brass finisher. [sources: 25, 26]
He died suddenly, on 11 October 1873, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of "injuries in falling". He was married. He was a machinist. He was buried from his late residence, 800 Duane Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 15 October 1873, he was buried, in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The government supplied a headstone. [sources: 13, 14, 16, 17, 18]
On 12 January 1874, his widow, Mary Marple, applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 13, 15]
In 1880, his widow, Mary Marple, was living at 10 Osage Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was a fish seller. She was living with her children Thomas, Samuel, Mary, and Charles. [source: 27]
Probably in fall 1890, his sons Harry and Samuel were living at 1203 Potts Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 21]
On 6 February 1896, his widow, Mary Marple, died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died of paralysis. Her funeral was held at her son's residence, 1203 Potts Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (apparently Harry C Marple, who was a carpenter). She was buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 19, 20, 21, 22]
I have found (at least) two Thomas Marple's born around 1840 who lived in Philadelphia. Here's why I've reconstructed the Thomas who served in the 91st as I did above.
First, the evidence that he died on 11 October 1873 and was buried in Mount Vernon is very strong, with sources 13, 16, and 17 all primary sources linking the Thomas Marple who died then to the 91st. The link to the Mary who died on 6 February 1896 is also very strong, since (1) the pension index by name (source 15) confirms that his widow's name is 'Mary', (2) her newspaper death notice (source 21) lists her as the widow of Thomas J Marple, and (3) she is buried in the same cemetery; (4) she is also listed on Find a grave as his wife (sources 18 and 19). Her newspaper death notice (source 20; see also 22) tells us that she had a son who was then living at 1203 Potts Street, and the only candidate in the city directory (source 21) is Harry C Marple, carpenter. The regimental records indicate that Thomas Marple was 29 in 1861, and was born in Montgomery Pennsylvania (presumably Montgomery County).
So, the records tied closely to his service tell us that Thomas Marple was born in Pennsylvania in 1832/33, married Mary, had a child Harry C, and died in 1873.
Another Thomas Marple died on 22 October 1931 in Philadelphia, having served in company E of the 95th Pennsylvania. He was living with his spouse Mary in the 1910 to 1930 census records, and was a deputy US Marshall. His occupation connects him to the Thomas Marple living with a spouse Hannah in 1900, which (with his occupation) connects him to the 1870 to 1890 census records I have listed below. This both rules out those census records, and means that the Thomas and Mary in the 1910 to 1930 census records were not married in the pre-1873 records.
The 1860 to 1880 census records transcribed below (sources 24 to 27) are probably all of the same family, given the children, though this is least clear for the 1860 census. Whether the (apparent) father Thomas is the Thomas who served in the 91st isn't obvious, especially for the 1860 census.
Since I have not found another Thomas Marple in Philadelphia born about 1815 (though I have found one born about 1805), I suspect his age was incorrectly recorded (as often happened). His occupation in the regimental records is consistent with his occupation at death (machinist) and in the 1870 census (brass finisher), and the fact that they do not match his occupation in the 1860 census entry is troubling. But since I have not found another Thomas Marple who could be the Thomas who served in the 91st, I have tentatively assigned all these census records to him. (Note the Thomas Marple, 17 years old, living with Jno J Deemer et al., whom I have tentatively assigned below to the Thomas who married Hannah--he could easily be the Thomas who served in the 91st.)
Note, by the way, that the closest match I have found for the Staton's in the 1850 census is this household: Caroline Staten [or, Stalen] (37, born NY), Elizabeth Gacobe (17, born PA), Rebecca Gacobe (11, born PA), Mary Gacobe (8, born PA), John Gacobe (22, born PA, cooper), Mary Kennedy (23, born Ireland), and John Gacobe (8 months, born PA) (Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Penn District, microfilm series M432, film 820, page 146 verso (FamilySearch). (I did not find the Gacobe's in any other census, and a cursory search did not find any other references to them.) Perhaps Caroline adoped Elizabeth and Mary between 1850 and 1860.
