Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 13 September 1862 (1, 2, 3, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Colonel Reiff (2). He was a private in company A (1, 14).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (11).

He was transferred to the Veterans' Reserve Corps (1, 2, 3, 14). The regiment reported his transfer on 5 September 1864 (6). He was a private, in company A (14).

He was discharged on 10 July 1865 (3).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in the 17th [?] ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with Mary Mayhew (his mother) and several other Mayhew's (9). He was a tin roofer (9).

In 1880, he was living at 1237 [illegible] Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his brother Isaac, Isaac's family, and two other siblings (10). He was a tin roofer (10).

In 1890, he was living at 1626 Willington Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 5). He suffered from chronic diarrhea, but did not have a pension (4). He was either a roofer or a salesman (5). Another Joseph Mayhew, and Isaac S Mayhew, were living with him (5).

He died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 19 June 1891, of consumption (7, 13). He was a tin roofer (13). He was single (13). He died at, or was buried from, 2922 Ridge Avenue, 32nd ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). On 24 June 1891, he was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery (13).
