Before the war

He was born on 9 December 1819 (7 (1824), 8 (9 Dec 1819); 3 (44 in 1865), 10 (28 in 1850), 11 (38 in 1860), 12 (49 in 1870), 13 (58 in 1880)). He was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania (3, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13). He was born to Samuel Meals and Maria Baltzly (8).

On 8 May 1845, he married Elizabeth Bream (8). She had 3 children (14 [1 alive in 1900], 15 [2 alive in 1910]).

In 1850, he was living in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Elizabeth, children Susanna and Eliza, and with George Pensil (10). He was a farmer (10).

In 1860, he was living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Elizabeth and children Susannah and Eliza (11). He was a farmer (11).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (3).

During the war

He was drafted from Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (1, 3). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 February 1865 (1, 3, 4, 6). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (3). His service was credited to the Sixteenth Congressional District (3). He was a private in company G (1, 7, 16).

He received clothing worth $41.05 (3).

He was discharged by special order 194, War Department, on 29 April 1865 (1 [g.o.], 2 [s.o.194], 3 [so194], 4, 6). He was a private, in company G (16).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Elizabeth, a servant, and another person (12). He was a farm laborer, and owned real estate worth $1,200, and personal property worth $500 (12).

In 1880, he was living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife Elizabeth (13). He was a farmer (13).

On 22 January 1889, he applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (5, 6).

In 1890, he was living in Tyrone, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office: Heidlersburg) (4). He had a running sore in his hip (4).

He died on 3 October 1898, in Gardners, Adams County, Pennsylvania (7 [1898], 8). He was buried in Upper Bermudian Church Cemetery, Gardners, Adams County, Pennsylvania (7).

In 1900, his widow, Elizabeth Meals, was living in Huntington Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (14). She was living with her daughter Eliza and Eliza's family (14).

In 1910, his widow, Elizabeth Meals, was living on State Road, in Huntington Township, Adams Couunty, Pennsylvania (15). She was living with her daughter Elizabeth and Elizabeth's family (15).

His widow Elizabeth died on 1 February 1915, in Gardners, Adams County, Pennsylvania (8, 9). She was buried in the Upper Bermudian Church Cemetery in Gardners, Adams County, Pennsylvania, was his wife (9). She was 87 years old (9).
