Before the war

During the war

He was drafted. He was mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 27 July 1864 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was in company D of the 118th Pennsylvania. [sources: 1 (27 Jul 64), 2 (27 Jul 63), 5]

He was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 1 June 1865. He was in the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry. [sources: 1, 2, 4, 11 (corp)]

On 16 June 1865, he was promoted to corporal, effective 5 June 1865. [sources: 1 (5 June), 2 (effective 16 June), 3 (5 June)]

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company. He was a corporal, in company F. [sources: 1, 11]

After the war

He married Sarah [unknown family name]. They apparently had eleven children, including these:

In 1870, he was living in ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Sarah, with their children Charles and Joseph, and with Anna Bell (perhaps his sister). He was a shoe heeler, and owned $300 in personal property. [source: 6]

In 1880, he was living at 1230 Potts Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Sarah and children Charles and Joseph. He was working in a shoe factory. [source: 7]

In 1890, he was living at 324 Taylor Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 4]

On 14 September 1891, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [source: 5, 12]

On 15 April 1898, he died, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of pneumonia. He was a shoemaker, and was married. On 18 April 1898, he was buried, at Northwood Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried from, 1513 Beulah Street, ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 10, 13]

On 20 April 1898, his widow, Sarah Megonigal, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 5, 12]

In 1900, his widow Sarah was living at 941 Siegel Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylavnia. She was living with her son Charles, and two of his children. [source: 8]

In 1910, his widow Sarah was living at 1861 Welsh Road, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with her son Charles and others. [source: 9]
