Before the war

He was born in Burlington, New Jersey (4). He was born in 1826/27 (2 (34 in 1861), 4 (34 in 1861)).

When he enlisted, he was a waterman (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10-3/4 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (2 [5'10 1/4[?]"], 4 [5'10-3/4"]). He had a scar down his nose (4).

During the war

He also served in the 21st New York Infantry (6).

He enlisted and was mustered into service, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 2 or 3 October 1861 (1, 2 [3 Oct], 4 [3 Oct], 5 [3 Oct]). He was enlisted for three years, by Captain Keyser (2, 4, 5). He was mustered in as a private, in company B (1, 2, 6-7).

He was transferred to company C (1, 2).

He deserted at Alexandria, Virginia, on 1 September 1862 or 31 September 1862 (1, 2, 3 [31 Sep], 4, 5 [1 Sep]). (31 September may be the date he was reported deserted.) The company C register of deserters reports that his "whereabouts [were] not known" (3). He was a private, in company C (6-7).
