He was born in October 1840 (10; 3 (22 in 1861), 6, 11 [69 in 1910], 12 [79 in 1920]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 10, 11, 12).
When he enlisted, he was a machinist (3).
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (3).
He enlisted and was mustered into service as sergeant major on 4 December 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3, 6 [originally private in company F, 4 Dec 61], 8). He was the regiment's sergeant major (1, 2, 3, 13-14).
On 18 April 1863 (or possibly 19 April 1863) he was sick, and was sent to the Corps Hospital (4). He was still there on 24 April 1863 (4).
According to some secondary sources, he was discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 6). On 13 November 1863, he was transferred to the Invalid Corps, by general order number 365 (5). When he was transferred, he was the regiment's sergeant major (13-14). He served in company F of the 16th Veterans' reserve corps, as sergeant (2).
He was discharged on 5 May 1864 (8).
In 1879/80, he married to Mary S [unknown family name] (7, 10, 11). It was the first marriage for both of them (11). They apparently had the following two children (10 (2 children both alive, 1900), 11 (2 children, both alive, 1910)):
In 1890, he was living at 232 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (8, 9). He was a salesman (9).
He applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 17 January 1891 and 27 March 1907 (2, 7).
In 1900, he was living at 232 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was a mechanical engineer (10). He was living with his wife Mary, his children Caroline and Marjorie [?], his mother-in-law, a boarder, and a servant (10).
In 1910, he was living at 223 [sic] North 20th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was a mechanical engineer (11). He was living with his wife Mary and daughter Margaret (11).
In 1920, he was living at 25 Russell Street, Brooklind [?], Norfolk County, Massachusetts (12). He had no occupation (12). He was living with his daughter Marjarie and her family (12).
He died on 14 September 1921, in Brookline, Massachusetts (2).
Mary S Piers, his widow, applied successfully from Massachusetts for a pension on 22 September 1921 (2, 7).
