In 1850, he was living in Middlebury, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was living with John, Betsy, and Lucy Ives, and with Clarissa Philips. He had attended school within the year. [source: 19]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He also served in company H of the 35th Pennsylvania Infantry (the 6th Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry). On 22 April 1861, he was mustered in as a private in company H. On 11 June 1864, he was mustered out, with his company, as a corporal. [sources: 3, 8, 11-12, 13 (mustered in as corp?), 14]

He was a substitute. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 18 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Williamsport, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster. He was a private in company C. [sources: 1, 2, 9-10]

After the war

He married Ellen A Hymes. They apparently had these children:

In 1870, he was living in Middlebury, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer, and owned $475 in personal property. He was living with his wife Ellen and son Edwin. [source: 4]

On 19 December 1879, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 3, 8]

In 1880, he was living in Middlebury, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was farming. He was living with his wife Ellen and children Ed and Fanny. [source: 5]

On 14 September 1889, Ellen died. She was buried in Hammond Cemetery, Tioga, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. [source: 16]

In 1890, he was living in Tioga County, Pennsylvania (post office Hamond). He had chronic diarrhea. [source: 14]

He again applied for a pension on 26 February 1907. [source: 8]

He died on 19 February 1910, at Tioga Borough, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer. He died of cancer of the bowels, with chronic dysentery contributing. On 22 February 1910, he was buried in Hammond Cemetery, Tioga, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 8, 15, 17]

On 30 March 1910, his widow, Hattie A Phillips, applied succesfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 3, 8]
