Before the war

He was born in July 1828, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, probably to Israel and Mary Pomeroy. [sources: date: 10; 5 (34 in 1863), 9 (52 in 1880), 10 (72 in 1900), 14 (21 in 1850), 15 (30 in 1860), 16 (41 in 1870), 18 (73 at death in 1901). place: 5, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 18]

In 1850, he was probably living in ward 2, Kensington, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Israel and Mary Pomroy (presumably his parents), and with Valentine Pomroy (presumably his brother), and four Smith's. He was a morocco dresser. [source: 14]

Probably about 1850, he married Eliza [unknown family name]. She was born on 1 August 1836, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They apparently had these ten children: [sources: 10 (10 children 7 alive in 1900), 17, 20, 21]

In 1860, he was living in ward 16, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Elisabeth, and children John, Samuel, George, Clara, and Henry. He was a morocco dresser. [source: 15]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and sandy hair. He was freckled. [source: 5]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 16 September 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Smith. He was a private, in company C. [sources: 1, 5, 22]

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. [source: 7]

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer. [source: 1]

On 26 March 1865, he was promoted to corporal, effective 1 March 1865. [sources: 1, 2, 4]

On 23 March 1865, he went on a furlough, which expired on 7 April 1865. [source: 3]

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company. He was a corporal, in company C. [sources: 1, 22]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 16, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Eliza, and children John, Samuel, George, Clara, Harry, Sallie, and Peter. He was a morocco dresser, and owned $600 in personal property. [source: 16]

In 1880, he was living at 933 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a morocco finisher. He was living with his wife Eliza, and children Samuel, George, Clara, Harry, Sallie, Edward, and Ella. [source: 9]

In 1890, he was living at the rear of 933 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 11]

On 15 July 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 8, 12]

In 1900, he was living at 1 Rifton Place, ward 16, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a morocco worker. He had been out of work for 10 months in the previous year. He was living with his wife Eliza and son George. [source: 10]

On 24 March 1901, he died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of paralysis of bladder. He was a morocco worker. He died at rear 946 North 3rd Street, ward 16, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 27 March 1901, he was buried, initially in St John's ME Church Vault, and then in North Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Surviving members of company C of the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry and of the Globe Engine Company were invited to attend. [sources: 18, 19, 20]

On 30 April [?] 1909 [??--presumably earlier], his widow, Eliza Pomeroy, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 8, 12]

On 20 February 1909, his widow, Elizie Pomroy, died, of myocarditis. She died at, and lived at, 946 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 24 February 1909, she was buried, initially in St John's ME Church Vault, and ultimately in North Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sourceS: 17, 20]
