Before the war

In 1860/61, he married Eliza [unknown family name] (10). In 1900, she had had four children, none of whom were alive (10).

When he enlisted, he was a clerk (6).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-3/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair (6).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 10 September 1861 (1, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Gilbert (6). He was a private in company G (6, 12).

He was detailed as a clerk in the Quarter Master's Office, Washington DC, by an order dated 4 March 1862, and was still there on 13 June 1863 (2).

He was discharged on 20 August 1863 by special order 372, Major General Halleck (1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8). He was a private, in company G (12). The regiment received the order on 4 September 1863 (3, 4). He was discharged to take a civil appointment (8).

After the war

In 1880, he was living in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey (9). He was living with his wife Eliza (9). He was a leather manufacturer (9).

In 1890, he was living in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey (8).

In 1900, he was living at 116 Harrison Avenue, ward 8, Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey (10). He was living with his wife Eliza (10).

He died on 27 September 1904 (11).

On 17 October 1904, his widow, Eliza D Roberts, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (7, 11).
