When he enlisted, he was a coal heaver. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a sallow complexion, blue eyes, and black hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He also served in company D of the 7th Pennsylvania Infantry. [source: 3]

He also served as a private in companies B and M of the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry (which is also known as the 70th Pennsylvania). He enlisted and was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 29 August 1861. According to the 1890 census, he 'escaped from Belle Island Va and went Back to Regt', but 'deserted'. He was not accounted for when the regiment mustered out. [sources: 3, 15, 16, 17, 18]

He also served in the US Navy. He was a coal heaver on the USS Princeton and the Tacony. [sources: 3, 6, 18 (fireman)]

He enlisted and was mustered into service for one year, as a substitute, on 24 March 1865, at Pottsville, Pennsylvania. He was enlisted and mustered into service by Captain Bowan. He was a private in company E. [sources: 1, 2, 3 (11 Jan 1864), 14]

After the war

On 13 October 1874, he married Esther A Wade, in Allen County, Indiana. This was the second marriage for both of them. She was born on August 1844, in Pennsylvania. [sources: 4, 10 (1 child, not living, in 1900), 11 (1 child, not living, in 1910), 13]

In 1880, he was living in Braidwood, Will County, Illinois. He was living with his wife Esther. He was a coal miner, and had been unemployed 4 months in the previous year. [source: 9]

In 1890, he was living in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

On 8 November 1897, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 3, 7]

In 1900, he was living at 421 North 8th Street, ward 6, Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. He was living with his wife, Esther, and their foster Child John H Stuckey and his family. [source: 10]

On 30 October 1908, he again applied for a pension, under the Act of 6 February 1907. He received $12 per month, effective 30 October 1908; the certificate was dated 30 January 1911. [sources: 3, 6]

In 1910, he was living in election district 10, West County, Wyoming. He was living with his wife, Esther A Powell. He was a schoolhouse janitor, and had not been unemployed in the previous year. [source: 11]

He received a pension of $25 per month effective 14 November 1914; the certificate was dated 23 April 1915, apparently under the Act of 11 May 1912. [sources: 3, 6]

He received a pension of $30 per month effective 12 March 1915; the certificate was dated 23 April 1915. [sources: 3, 6]

He received a pension of $40 per month effective 10 June 1918. [sources: 3, 6]

In 1920, he and his wife were living in the Soldiers and Sailors home, in election district 2, Johnson County, Wyoming. [source: 12]

He died on 27 March 1923, at the Soldiers Home, in Buffalo, Johnson County, Wyoming. He was buried in Willow Grove Cemetery, Buffalo, Johnson County, Wyoming. [sources: 3 (3rd card only) ]

His widow, Esther A Powell, received the remainder of the pension due him; the order was dated 28 July 1923. [source: 6]
