He was born on 5 April 1842 (or 1840?), to Frederick Moering Rooke and Margaret Smithes (13 [Apr 1840], 14 [5 Apr 1842], 15 [9 in 1850]). He was 20 years old when he enlisted in the 18th Pennsylvania Infantry in April 1861 (6, 10 [19 in 1860], 11 [30 in 1870], 12 [39 in 1880], 13 [60 in 1900]). He was 21 years old when he enlisted in August 1861 (4). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 14, 15).
In 1850, he was living in the 2nd ward, Spring Garden, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (15). He had attended school within the year (15).
In 1860, he was living in the 20th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, apparently with his family (10). He was an apprentice to a blacksmith (10).
When he enlisted, he was a machinist, and was living in Philadelphia (4, 6).
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-1/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (4).
On 24 April 1861, he was mustered in as a private in company I of the 18th Pennsylvania Infantry, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6, 7 [22 Apr]). The regiment mustered out on 7 August 1861 (6, 7 [6 Aug]).
He enlisted and was mustered into service as a sergeant in company A on 20 August 1861 (1, 3, 4, 6 [as pvt], 7 [25 Aug], 17-18). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr (4).
He was reduced to the ranks (3).
He was discharged, from a camp in the field, on 27 May 1863 (1) or on 28 January 1863 (2), or on 27 January 1863 (4), on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2, 4, 6, 7 [26 Jan 63]). He was a private in company A (1, 2, 17-18).
He also served as sergeant in company H of the 33rd Pennsylvania Militia Infantry (5, 6, 7). He was mustered in on 17 June 1863, and discharged on 5 August 1863 (7).
He married Eliza or Jennie [unknown family name] in 1863/64 (11 [Eliza], 12 [Jennie], 13 [Jennie], 14 [Jane ("Jennie")], 16 [Jennie]). In 1900, she had had six children, four of whom were alive (13).
In 1870, he was living in the 24th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was a switchtender (11). He was living with Eliza (presumably his wife) and his daughter Alice (11).
In 1880, he was living at 2324 Alter Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). He was a watchman (12). He was living with his wife Jannie, and children Alice, Emily, Henry, and Ann (12).
In 1890, he was living at 1933 Wilder Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was a switchman (7).
In 1900, he was living at 1250 23rd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife Jennie [?], his son Marion, and his daughter Mary A Boott and her spouse (13).
On 16 October 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (5, 9).
He died on 28 March 1906 (14, 16), probably in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The funeral was held on Monday from 125 South 23rd Street, in Philadelphia (his residence) (16). He is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery (16).
On 16 June 1906, his widow, Jane Rooke, applied successfully for a pension (5, 9).
