He was born about 16 November 1842 (5, 10 (Oct 1842); 2 (22 in 1865), 5 (68 yrs 2 mnths 23 dys at death in 1911), 6 (10 in 1850), 7 (18 in 1860), 8 (25 in 1870), 9 (33 in 1880), 10 (57 in 1900), 11 (67 in 1910)). He was born in Pennsylvania (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11). He was born to Jacob P Russell (1792-1869) and Catherine E Weaver (1811-1872/73) (5).

In 1850, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with Jacob and Catherine Russell (his parents), and with others (presumably siblings) (6).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

His brother Isaac Russell also served in the 91st.

He was drafted (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 15 March 1865 (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for one year, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lloyd (2). He reported for duty on 15 March 1865 (2). His service was credited to the seventeenth congressional district (2). He was a private in company D (1, 4).

He deserted on 29 June 1865 (1, 3). He was a private, in company D (4).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (8). He was a farmer (8). He owned $4,250 in real estate, and $860 in personal property (8).

He married Sarah [unknown family name] (5). They had two children:(5)

In 1882/83, he married Laura O [unknown family name] (5, 10, 11). In 1900, she reported having had three children, two of whom were alive; in 1910, one was alive (10, 11).

In 1890, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (post office: Shybeaver) (3). He had had chronic diarrhea, and had been in hospital for two weeks (3).

On 8 February 1911, he died, near Saxton, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (5). He belonged to the home department, Church of God Sunday School (5). His wife and son Ira survived him (5). He was buried at the new Odd Fellows' Cemetery (5).

In 1920, his widow Laura was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (12).

In 1941-42, Theodore R Hile donated to the Smithsonian Museum a wooden farm funnel made by Abraham Russell about 1865 to use on his farm in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (4).
