Before the war

He was born in August 1837 (5 (1838), 9; 2 (26 in 1865), 6 (21 in 1860), 7 (30 in 1870), 8 (45 in 1880), 9 (62 in 1900), 10 (72 in 1910)). He was born in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). He was born to Jacob P Russell and Catharine Weaver (5).

In 1850, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his parents Jacob and Catharine Russel, with many siblings (12).

In 1860, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (6). He was a farm laborer, and had attended school within the year (6). He was living with his parents Jacob and Catharine Russle (6).

When he enlisted, he worked at a r[ail] road (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair (2).

During the war

His brother Abraham Russell also served in the 91st.

He was drafted (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 15 March 1865 (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for one year, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lloyd (2). He reported for duty on 15 March 1865 (2). His service was credited to the seventeenth congressional district (2). He was a private in company D (1, 14).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3 [7 Jul 65]). He was a private, in company D (14).

After the war

He married Maria [or Mariah] in 1866/1867 (5, 10, 11). They had one child, who was still alive in 1910 (5, 10,11):

In 1870, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (7). He was a railroad laborer, and owned $1,750 in real estate and $200 in personal property (7). He was living with his wife Maria and child Alfred (7).

In 1880, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (8). He was working on a farm (8). He was living with his wife Mariah, son Alfred, and a servant (8).

On 6 September 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 13).

In 1890, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (post office: Shybeaver) (3).

In 1900, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (9). He was a farmer (9). He was living with his wife Margaret (9).

On 16 January 1908, he again applied for a pension (13).

In 1910, he was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (10). He was a farmer (10). He was living with his wife Mariah (10).

He died on 6 May 1911, at Shy Beaver, Pennsylvania (5, 13). He was buried in Russellville Cemetery, Russellville, Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (5).

On 19 June 1911, his widow, Maria Russell, applied successfully for a pension (4, 13).

In 1920, his widow, Mariah Russell, was living in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania (11).
