On 21 March 1865, he enlisted and was mustered into service in the 91st, as a private, at Reading, [Berks,] Pennsylvania. He was a substitute for Daniel A Harigan, in the 4th subdistrict of the 8th Congressional District of Pennsylvania. [sources: 1, 2]

He is listed on a muster and descriptive roll of a detachment of drafted men and substitutes forwarded for the 91st, dated Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 25 March 1865. But he is not on any of the regiment's company muster rolls. [source: 2]
