John Schudy (or Tschuty, Tschutz, or Leshudy)

Before the war

He was born on 14 October 1846 (9; 4 (18 in 1864), 7 (62 in 1908), 8 (62 in 1908), 10 (62 in 1908), 11 (62 in 1908), 12 (62 in 1908), 13 (64 in 1910), 14 (62 in 1908)). He was born in Pennsylvania (4, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet tall, and had a hazel complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (4).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania on 8 February 1864 (1, 2, 4, 5 [Apr/May 65], 10, 11, 12). He was enlisted for three years, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain O'Day [?] (4, 10, 11, 12). He was not assigned to a company in the 118th Pennsylvania (2, 5 [in company G], 9 [co.G]).

He received $300 in bounty, in three installments (4).

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania to the 91st Pennsylvania (1 [to 118th], 2, 3). He was a private in company I of the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 7, 10, 14, 15).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 5, 10, 11, 12). He had served for seventeen months (7, 8, 11, 14). He was a private, in company I (15).

After the war

He also served in company C of the 31st US Infantry (5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14). He enlisted on 15 January 1866, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (10, 11, 12). He was a private (10, 11, 12).

On 30 November 1869, he was discharged, at Fort Buford, Dakota, by General Order 24 (10, 11, 12). He served for forty-six months (8, 11, 14).

After he was discharged, he lived in Rheems, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (10, 11, 12).

On 17 April 1886, he applied successfully for a pension (5, 6).

On 12 September 1907, he again applied for a pension (5).

On 17 January 1908, he was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 14). He was present in the Southern Branch in 1908 (7). He was then receiving a pension of $6 per month (7, 10). He had chronic articular rheumatism and cardiac hypertrophy (10). He was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and light hair (10, 11, 12). He was a protestant (10, 11, 12). He was a farmer (10, 11, 12). He was single (10, 11, 12). His nearest relative was his brother-in-law, William B Miller, who lived in Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (10, 11, 12).

On 21 April 1909, he was transfered to the Western Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (10, 11 [24 Apr], 12 [2 Apr]). He had impaired hearing, lumbar myalgia, hemorrhoids, and varicose veins on both legs (11).

On 4 June 1909, he was discharged at his own request from the Western Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (8, 11 [4 June 10], 12, 16 [4 June 1910]). He was then receiving a pension of $12 per month (8, 12, 16).

On 13 January 1910, he was admitted to the Mountain Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (11).

In 1910, he was living in the Mountain Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (13). He was single (13).

He died on 4 February 1927, at Elizabethtown, [Lancaster County,] Pennsylvania (5, 9). He was buried in the Mount Tunnel Cemetery, Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (9).
