On 21 September 1864, he was drafted, and mustered into service, at Chambersburg, [Franklin County,] Pennsylvania. He was a private, but was not assigned to any company. [sources: 1, 2]

He is listed on a Muster and descriptive roll of a detachment of drafted men and substitutes forwarded for the 91st, dated Camp Biddle, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, 12 October 1864. But he is not listed on any of the regiment's company muster rolls. [source: 2]
