Hiram Shaalas

Before the war

He was born on 19 January 1843, to Jonas Shaulis and Elizabeth Hersch (9, 10, 12, 13 (10 Jan); 3 (21 in 1865), 7 (26 in 1870), 8 (37 in 1880), 9 (57 in 1900), 11 (17 in 1860)). He was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania (7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13).

In 1860, he was living in Somerset Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with Jones and Eliza Shauley [?] (his parents), along with others (11). He had attended school within the year (11).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 3). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 11 March 1865 (1, 3, 4, 5). He was mustered in as a private, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (3). He was a private in company B (1, 14-16).

He may have been charged for a lost wrench, wiper, and equipments, perhaps when the regiment mustered out (2).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3, 4, 5). He was a private, in company B (14-16).

After the war

On 25 December 1866, he married Annie J Rhodes (9, 12). They had six known children (9 (4 children, 1 alive, in 1900), 12 (see 13 for some variants)):

In 1870, he was living in Somerset Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Anna and son Harry (7). He was a laborer, and owned $500 in personal property (7).

On 6 March 1880, he successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 6).

In 1880, he was living in Somerset Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania (8). He was a farmer (8). He was living with his wife Annie, children Harry, Ida, and Norman, and a servant (8). He had chronic d[iarrhea?] (8).

In 1890, he was living in Edie [?], Somerset Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania (5). He reported these disabilities: diarrhea and piles (5).

In 1900, he was living in Lincoln Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania (9). He was a farmer (9). He was living with his wife Annie and son Amos (9).

He died on 21 December 1918, at Somerset County, Pennsylvania (4, 10, 12, 13). He was buried at Christ Casebeer Lutheran Church Cemetery (10), Sipesville, Lincoln Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania (10, 12, 13).

On 2 [perhaps 20-something?] January 1918, Annie J Shaulis, his widow, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 6 [1919]).

On 24 July 1921, his widow, Annie J Rhodes, died, in Somerset County, Pennsylvania (12, 13). She was buried in Casebeer Lutheran Cemetery, Lincoln Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania (12, 13).
