91st PA: Charles Smaltz

Charles Smaltz

Photo

A photo of Charles and his wife is available on his Find-a-grave memorial (added by Jan) (15).

Identification

The veterans schedule from the 1890 census clearly identifies him as living in Taylor Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (4). This makes extremely likely that the Charles Smaltz living in Taylor Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania in 1880 and 1900 is the man who served in the 91st (10, 14).

However, according to the pension index by unit, he died in Pompeii Michigan on 20 May 1915 (7). This seems to make likely that the Charles Smaltz living in Michigan in 1910 is the man who served in the 91st--and he is living with his daughter Minnie, born September 1876, which matches the 3-year-old Minnie in the 1880 census in Blair County, Pennsylvania (12). Unfortunately, that Charles Smaltz obviously matches a Charles Smaltz living in Liberty Township, Wood County, Ohio, in 1900 (not in Blair County Pennsylvania!), living with his daughter Minnie (with the same husband and son as in the 1910 census) (11). Further, Charles S Smaltz's death notice in 1944 lists his sister as "Mrs Minnie Schell, Bowling Green, O" (16). (It is of course, possible that she had remarried.)

To make things more complicated, there is a Charles Smaltz living in Ohio in the 1870 census, married to Catherine, with children Elizabeth and Charles--very close in age to the people living in Taylor Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania in 1880 (though missing four children, Levi, David, Mary, and John) (13). But there is also a Charley Smaltz living in Taylor Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania--who matches the 1880 Charles Smaltz more closely (9).

Except for the place of death listed in the pension index by unit (7), I would simply regard these as two (or even three) separate people, with oddly coincidental dates of death and children. But with that place of death, and with my not having found a Charles Smaltz in Blair County in 1910, or in Ohio or Michigan in other years, I am uncertain how to make sense of this data. (Was he, perhaps, visiting his daughter in Ohio in 1900 when the census taker came?)

I have (tentatively) assumed that the Charles Smaltz in Blair County in 1870-1900, and the Charles Smaltz in Michigan in 1910, are the same man, who served in the 91st Pennsylvania, and have added a Charles Smaltz in Blair County in 1850, who seems likely to be the same person.

Before the war

He was born on 3 September 1832 (14 [Apr 1833], 15 [3 Sep 32], 17; 2 (33 in 1864), 8 (16 in 1850), 9 (37 in 1870), 10 (46 in 1880), 12 (78 in 1910), 14 (67 in 1900)). He was born in Wurttemberg, Germany (2 [Germany], 8 [PA], 9 [PA], 10 [Wurttemberg], 12 [Germany], 14 [Germany], 15 [Wurttemberg]). He was born to Christian Frederich Smaltz and Anna Maria Arnold (15).

He may have immigrated to the US in 1839 (11 [but see my note on identification above]; cf 14). He was a naturalized citizen by 1870 (9, 14).

In 1850, he was living in North Woodbury Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (8). He was a laborer (8). He had attended school within the year (8).

He married Catharine Shoeman (15).

When he enlisted, he was a lab[orer] (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted (1). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 2, 4 [7 Oct 64], 7 [7 Oct 64]). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (2). His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district (2). He was a private in company C (1, 17, 18).

He was discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability on 11 April 1865 (1, 4, 6, 7). He was a private, in company C (18).

After the war

On 14 April 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (5, 7).

In 1870, he was living in Taylor Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (9; cf. 13 and see my note on identification above). He was living with Catharine (presumably his wife), and with Levi, Sarah, David, Anni, Elizabeth, John, and Charley (presumably their children) (9). He was a toll gate keeper, and owned $100 in personal property (9).

In 1880, he was living in Taylor Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Catharine, and children Levi, David, Mary, Elizabeth, John H, Charles, Andrew, and Minnie, and with a boarder (10). He was a farmer (10). He was an invalid (10).

In 1890, he was living in Taylor Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (post office: Roaring Spring) (4). His left arm had been shot off (4).

On 21 April 1900, his wife, Catharine Smaltz, died, in Roaring Spring, Blair County, Pennsylvania (15). She was buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Roaring Spring, Blair County, Pennsylvania (15).

In 1900, he was living in Taylor Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania (14; cf. 11 and see my note on identification above). He was living with his son Charles S Smaltz and his family (14). He was not working (14). He was widowed (14).

In 1910, he was living in Fulton Township, Gratiot County, Michigan (12 [but see my note on identification above]). He was living with his daughter Minnie Garber and her family (12). He was not working (12).

He died on 20 May 1915, at Pompeii, Michigan (7 [Pompeii MI], 15 [Roaring Spring, Blair, PA], 17). He was buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Roaring Spring, Blair County, Pennsylvania (15, 17).
