At least four of his brothers served in the Civil War (3). His brother Jerome Small served in company F (3). Jacob served in company F of the 165th Pennsylvania, and was a veteran volunteer in company C of the 152nd Pennsylvania (3). William served in company H of the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry from 19 September 1861 to 13 October 1864, and was wounded at the Wilderness, with a bullet lodged near his spine (3). David served in company C of the 202nd Pennsylvania (3). He also had a brother Daniel, who was married to Agnes V Butler, and is not the Daniel Small who served in company C of the 202nd Pennsylvania (married to Anne Marie Heidler), or the Daniel Small who served in the 152nd Pennsylvania, 3rd Heavy Artillery, Co U (married to Julia) (6).
Jeremiah also served in the 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (9). He enlisted on 16 October 1862 (9). He was discharged on 29 July 1863 (9).
He was a substitute (1, 8). He was mustered into service as a private on 23 March 1865 at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (1, 8, 9 [28 Feb]). He was a private, in company F (1, 14).
He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 8, 9). He was a private, in company F (14).
He was married to Sara Altroghy (also known as Anna M Althrogey), on 21 October 1866, at the Conewago Chapel, Adams County, Pennsylvania (6). They had four children (all baptized at the Conewago Chapel, Adams County) (6):
In 1870, Jeremiah was living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife Anna and children Cletus and Linus (13). He was a painter, and owned $360 in real property (13).
In 1880, Jeremiah D Small was living in Oxford, Adams County, Pennsylvania (5, 12). He was living with his son Cletus, his brother David Small, and David's family (5, 12). He was a painter (5, 12). He was widowed or divorced (12).
He was married for a second time, to Lydian Laughman (of Berwick Township), on 23 October 1888, by Reverend Daniel F Haugh (7). They had a child, Lucy Ann Small, who was born on 21 January 1889, and baptized at the Conewago Chapel (6).
In 1890, he was living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office: Hanover) (9).
On 1 August 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (10, 11).
He died on 20 April 1908 (2, 4, 11). He is buried in the New Oxford Catholic Cemetery, Adams County, Pennsylvania (2), next to his brother William (3, 4).
On 28 April [?] 1908, his widow, Lydia A Small, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (10, 11).
On 2 [?] March 1912, Harry B Slagle, a minor dependent, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (10, 11).
