91st PA: Bartly Smith

Bartly Smith

Before the war

He was born in 1839/40 (4 (24 in 1864)). He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (4).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (4).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 4). His service was credited to the sixteenth congressional district (4). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 4, 5). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (4). He was a private in company I (1, 13).

He was discharged by general order on 30 or 31 May 1865 (1, 3 [31 May], 4 [31 May], 5 [30 May]). He was a private, in company I (13).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Broad Top Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (post office Yellow Creek) (7). He was living with Sarah (presumably his wife), and with Mary, George, Elizabeth, and Elvira [?] (presumably their children) (7). He was a laborer, and owned $500 in real estate and $150 in personal property (7).

In 1880, he was living in Mann Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (8). He was a farmer (8). He was living with his wife Sarah, and children Mary, George, Elizabeth, Elmira [?], Margaret, Harry, Barbara, and Katharine (8).

On 17 June 1889, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 10).

In 1890, he was living in Piney Creek, Mann Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (5).

He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Mann Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (2, 11, 12). He was apparently a member of the GAR (12).

On 21 [?] November 1899, his widow, Sarah Smith, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 10).

In 1900, his widow, Sarah Smith (assuming I've identified her correctly) was living in West St Clair Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (9).
