91st PA--Joseph Snyder

Joseph Snyder

Before the war

He was born in 1841/44 (3 (20 in 1864), 6 (18 in 1860)). He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (3, 6).

In 1860, he may have been living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (6). If so, he was living with Esther Snyder (perhaps his mother), Eve Anna Snyder (perhaps his sister?), and Nathan Potts (6). He was a farm laborer (6).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair (3).

During the war

He was drafted from the sixteenth congressional district (1, 3). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 3, 4). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (3). He was a private in company F (1, 12).

He was discharged near Washington DC by general order on 1 June 1865 (1, 2, 4 [20 May]). He was a private, in company F (12).

After the war

He married Hettie Croyle [?] (7, 8, 9, 10). In 1900 and 1910, she had had one child, who was still living (9, 10):

In 1870, his apparent widow, Hettie Snyder, was living in Bedford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (7). She was living with George and Susan Croyle (perhaps her parents?), with Elmira Croyle (perhaps her daughter?), with Susan Croyle (perhaps her niece), and William Little (7).

On 19 April 1878, his widow, Hetty Snyder, successfully applied for a pension (5, 9).

In 1880, his apparent widow Hettie may have been living in Bedford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (8). She was living with her brother Thomas Croyle, Elmira (presumably her daughter), and Mary (perhaps her niece) (8).

In 1890, his widow, Hettie [?] H Snyder, was living in Bedford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (4). He had had consumption (4).

In 1900, his apparent widow Hetty Snyder was living in Oxford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (9). She was living with her brother Thomas Croyle, her daughter Elmira Dibert [?], her granddaughter Hester Dibert, and a great-nephew and -niece (9). She was a farmer (9).

In 1910, his apparent widow Hattie Snyder was living in Bedford Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (10). She was living with her brother Thomas Croyle (10).

[identification is uncertain; given the 1870 and 1900 census entries, this seems likely to be her, and I haven't found any other Hettie Croyle's (the one living in Bedford Township in 1850 and 1860 seems to be this one), but note the surname and that she is listed as single, not widowed]
[Elmira could be the Elmira living with George and Susan Croyle (and Hettie Snider) in the 1870 census transcribed above]
