Augustus Stillwagon

Before the war

He was born in March 1846 (8, 11; 2 (40 in 1885), 4 (19-1/2 in 1865), 7 (50 in 1896?), 9 (23 in 1870), 10 (33 in 1880), 11 (54 in 1900), 12 (65 in 1910)). He was born in Pennsylvania (4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12).

In 1850, he was living in Gwynedd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with Enos and Mariah Stilwagon (presumably his parents), and with others (14).

When he enlisted, he was a segar maker (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (4).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 4). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 March 1865 (1, 4, 5, 13, 15). He was enlisted for one year, at Norristown, Pennsylvania, by Captain Yerkes (4). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1, 16-17).

He mustered out with the regiment, on 10 July 1865 with company (1, 5, 13, 15). He had served for three months (7). He was a private, in company H (16-17).

After the war

In 1869/70, he married Esther or Hester Witman or Whittman (8, 11, 12 [45 years in 1910]). They had three children (8 [2], 11 [2 alive in 1900], 12 [2 alive in 1910]), including:

In 1870, he was living in Towamensing County, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Esther, and children Henry and Elwood (9). He was a stone mason, and owned $200 in personal property (9).

In 1880, he was living in Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (10). He was a stone mason, and had been out of work for 5 months (10). He was living with his wife Esther, and his sons Henry and Willie (10).

On 31 March 1883, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 13).

On 22 June 1885, he mustered into the Grand Army of the Republic, Post 11, Zook Post, Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (2). He was then 40 years old (2).

In 1890, he was living in Cedars, Towamensin Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (5). He had contracted diarrhea, and was disabled (5).

On 18 February 1896, he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors' Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (7). He was admitted from Reading, Pennsylvania (7). He was single (7). He had lumbago (7). He was receiving a pension of $8 per month (7). He was a stonemason when he was enlisted (7).

He was summarily discharged from the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors' Home on 12 May 1896 (7).

In 1900, he was living in Towamensing Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (11). He was a presser (11). He was living with his wife Esther, son William, and brother-in-law Henry Witman (11).

In 1910, he was living in Worcester Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (12). He was a stone mason (12). He was living with his wife Esther and brother-in-law Henry Witman (12).

On 13 May 1911, he again applied for a pension (13).

He died on 27 April 1923, at Kulpsville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (13, 15). He was buried in Wentz's Reformed Cemetery, Center Point, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (15). His tomb has a GAR marker (15).
