Before the war

In 1850, he was living in Richland, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents Daniel and Sarah Stineman, and (apparent) siblings Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas, Susanah, William W H, and Leah. He had attended school within the year. [source: 11]

He and his family moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania, when he was a small child. [source: 2]

In 1860, he was living in Smith Woodbury Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents Daniel and Sarah Stineman, and (apparent) siblings Thomas, Susana, William, Leah, and Jane. He was a farm laborer, and had attended school within the year. [source: 12]

On 17 August 1862, he married Rebecca E Eckhard, in Bedford County, about 1862. They were married by Reverend Josiah Zimmerman. She was born on 15 October 1844, in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, to John Jacob Eckhard and Mary C Moses. They had one child:

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, blue eyes, and sandy hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864. He enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company B. [sources: 1, 3, 10, 16-17]

His brother, Thomas Stineman, also served in the 91st, and his brother William H Stineman served in the 138th PA. [source: 2]

He was killed on 27 October 1864 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia. He was a private, in company B. In the same battle, his brother Thomas Stineman (91st PA) was wounded, and his cousin Daniel T Stineman (198th PA) was killed (2). [sources: 1, 2, 8, 10, 16-17]

After the war

On 13 December 1864, Rebecca Steinman, his widow, successfully applied for a pension under the Act of 14 July 1862. She lived in Bedford County, Pennsylvania; her post-office address was Sarah, Blair County, Pennsylvania. Her application was accepted, and she received $8 per month, retroactive to 27 October 1864. On 16 May 1867, Rebecca Steinman applied for an increase in pension under the Act of 25 July 1866. her post-office address was St Clairsville, Bedford County, Pennsyvlania. Her application was accepted, and she received an additional $2 per month while Ellen was less than 16, retroactive to 25 July 1866 (7). [sources: 7, 10]

On 28 March 1869, she married Jacob Imler, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was born on 30 May 1840, in Pennsylvania. They had two known children:

On 26 April 1869, Peter Imler (Jacob's brother) was appointed guardian of the estate (but not the person) of Ellen C Steinman, on posting $1,500 security. [source: 10]

On 13 May 1869, Peter Imler, guardian of John Steinman's minor dependent Ellen, successfully applied for a pension under the Act of 14 July 1862. He appplied again on 30 June 1869. He received $8 per month, retroactive to 29 March 1869. [sources: 4, 5, 7, 10]

In 1870, Margaret was living with her second husband, Jacob Imler, and with Ellen and Minnie Imler. [source: 13]

On 7 July 1873, Peter Imler, guardian of John Steinman's minor dependent Ellen, applied for an increase of pension under the Act of 25 July 1866. His application was accepted, and he received an additional $2 per month for Ellen, retroactive to 29 March 1869. [source: 10]

In 1880, his widow was living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. She was living with her husband Jacob Imler, his daughter Mary S Imler, and Ellen Stineman. [source: 6]

In 1900, Rebecca and Jacob Imler were living in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They were living with their daughter Mary. [source: 14]

On 2 July 1904, Rebecca's (second) husband, Jacob Imler, died. He was buried in Imler Sain Paul Brethren Cemetery, Imler, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [source: 15]

On 5 April 1909, Rebecca Imler died, in King Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. She was buried in Imler Saint Paul Brethren Cemetery, Imler, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 8, 9]
