Thomas B Stineman

Before the war

He was born on 27 August 1840 (2, 11 (Oct 1839); 4 (24 in 1864), 5 (24 in 1864), 8 (11 in 1850), 9 (20 in 1860), 10 (41 in 1880), 11 (60 in 1900)). He was born in Cambria County, Pennsylvania (2; 4 (Bedford Cty), 5 (Bedford), 9, 10, 11). He was born to Daniel S Stineman and Sarah J Brown (2).

He and his family moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania, in the 1840's (2).

In 1850, he was living in Richland Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his parents Daniel and Sarah Stineman, and (probably) his siblings (8). He had attended school within the year (8).

In 1860, he was living in Union Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (9). He was liaving with his parents, Daniel and Sarah Stineman, and (probably) his siblings (9). He was a farm laborer (9).

On 3 November 1861, he was married to Catherine Geibel (daughter of Johannes Geibel), by Reverend Josiah Zimmerman (2, 11 [38 years in 1900]). They had one child, who died in infancy (2, 11 [1 child, not alive, in 1900]).

When he enlisted, he was a laborer (4, 5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair (4, 5).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 4, 5). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 4, 5). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (4, 5). His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district (4, 5). He was a private in company B (1, 12-13). His brother, John Stineman, also served in the 91st PA, and his brother William Stineman served in the 138th PA (2).

He was wounded in the left side on 27 October 1864 at Hatcher's Run Virginia (1, 2, 5). He spent much of his last six months in the service in the General Hospital, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2).

He was discharged on 23 May 1865 by general order (1, 2), on surgeon's certificate of disability (3). He was a private, in company B (12-13).

After the war

On 3 July 1879, he successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (2, 6, 7).

They moved to Union County, Iowa, in the early 1880's (2).

In 1880, he was living in Criston, Union County Iowa (10). He was living with his wife Kate, a servant, and a boarder (10). He was a carpenter (10).

In 1885, he was living in Creston, Iowa (8).

In 1900, he wasl iving at 409 North Pine Street, Criston [?], Union County, Iowa (11). He was living with his wife Catherine (11). He was a life insurance agent (11).

He died in Creston, Iowa, on 21 January 1908 (2).

On 31 [?] January 1908, Catharine Stineman, his widow, successfully applied from Iowa for a pension (2, 6, 7 [1906?]).

She died, in Creston, Iowa, in 1910 (2).
