91st PA--Jeremiah Stottsenburg

Jeremiah Stottsenburg

Before the war

He was born in in 1823/35, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, perhaps to John and Anna Stotsenburg. [sources: date: 3 (30 in 1862), 4 (19 in 1850), 5 (25 in 1860), 6 (36 in 1870), 7 (46 in 1880), 10 (66 in 1896). place: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10. parents: 4]

In 1850, he was living in North Mulberry Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a mariner. He was living with John and Anna Stotsenburg (presumably his parents), and others (perhaps siblings). [source: 4]

In 1860, he was living in ward 10, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a laborer. He was living with AM Stotensburg (presumably his mother), and others (perhaps siblings). [source: 5]

When he enlisted, he was a lab[orer]. [source: 3]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He (apparently) served as a Landsman on the Wyoming, in the US Navy. He mustered in in June 1860. He was discharged in August 1863. He had served for two years and three months. [source: 11]

He was mustered into service on 7 August 1862. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Termany [?]. [sources: 1, 3]

He deserted. [source: 3]

He was convicted of desertion by general court martial. He was sentenced to hard labor on public works until 9 December 1865, to be branded with the letter 'D', and to be dishonorably discharged. [source: 3]

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was a private in company I of the 91st Pennsylvania. [sources: 1, 2, 13]

He was discharged. He was a private, in company I. [sources: 1, 13]

After the war

In 1866, he was living at 231 North 16th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a sailor. His mother Ann, and brother William, were also living there. [source: 12]

In 1867, his mother Ann was living at 8 Graydon, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Perhaps he was living with her. [source: 12]

In 1868, he, his mother Anna, and his brothers Charles and Martin, were living at 10 Graydon, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a clerk. [source: 12]

In 1870, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Anna (presumably his sister). He was a fireman at a gas w[orks], or a stoker. He was living at 3 Graydon, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His mother Ann, and brothers Charles and Martin, were living at 10 Graydon. [sources: 6, 12]

In 1871-1874, he was still a stoker, living at 3 Graydon. And his mother Ann, and brothers Charles and Martin, were still living at 10 Graydon. He may have moved to 1314 Cherry Street at some point in 1873--but the city directory evidence is unclear, since in 1874 he is listed at 3 Graydon and not at 1314 Cherry. [source: 12]

In 1875, he was living at 1314 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a laborer. His mother Ann, and brothers Charles and Martin, were still living at 10 Graydon. [source: 12]

In 1878, he was living at 1529 Spring Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He worked in (presumably sold?) liquors. His mother Ann was living at rear 1529 Spring. [source: 12]

In 1879, he was living at 1529 Spring Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a laborer. [source: 12]

In 1880, he was living at 1529 Spring Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Emma. He worked in a gas house (7), or as a laborer. [sources: 7, 12]
