91st PA--Philip F Stotsenberg

Philip F Stotsenberg

Name

Bates (1) has P F Stotsenberg. The company E descriptive roll (2) has Philip L [?] Stetsberg.

Before the war

He was born in 1842/43 (2 [23 in 1863], 9 [20], 20 [8 in 1850], 21 [17 in 1860], 22 [28 in 1870], 23 [28 in 1870]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 9, 20, 21). He was born to John Stotsenberg and Margaret [unknown family name] (23).

In 1850, he was living in ward 6, Southwark, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (20). He was living with John and Margaret (presumably his parents), and with Edward, Mary, Margaret, John H, and Alfred (presumably his siblings) (20). He had attended school within the year (20).

In 1860, he was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (21). He was living with John and Margaret (presumably his parents), and with others (21). He was an apprentice blacksmith (21).

When he enlisted, he was a blacksmith, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 9).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 11-1/2 inches tall, had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (2), 9 [6'0"].

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service as a private in company E on 20 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 9, 10, 25-29 (corp)). He was mustered in by Lieutenant Swann (this may relate to his re-enlistment, not his original enlistment) (2).

He was appointed corporal on 10 September 1861 (1, 3).

On 6 April 1863, he returned to the regiment from duty with the cattle guard (6).

He fought, as a corporal, at the battle of Gettysburg (5).

He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer (1), on 24 December 1863, at Bealton, Virginia (2, 9 [26 Dec 63]). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Carpenter [perhaps William H Carpenter, lieutenant, company K] (2).

He was promoted on 16 September 1864 from corporal to sergeant (1, 3, 4, 9), for soldierly conduct during the 1864 campaign (2, 3).

On 29 November 1864, he went on a furlough, which ended on 9 December 1864 (7).

On 26 January 1865, company E published resolutions mourning the death of sixteen comrades, and sympathizing with their families (13). He was president of the committee (13).

On 9 June 1865, he began a furlough, which expired on 24 June 1865 (8).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 10). He was a sergeant, in company E (25-29).

After the war

On 7 December 1865, he married Louisa Loesch (15). The Reverend Mister Mullen married them (15).

In 1866, he was living at 846 Wharton Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). He was a laborer (24). His father, John Stotsenburg, was also living there (24).

In 1869, he was living at 327 German, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). He was a blacksmith (24).

In 1870, he was living at 327 German Street, ward 4, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (22, 24). He was living with Louisa (presumably his wife), Harry, and Lauren (22). He was a watchman (24).

In 1871, he was living at 327 German Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). He was a watchman (24).

In 1872, he was living at 327 German Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). He was a policeman (24).

In 1873, he was living at 327 German Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). He was a watchman (24).

In 1874, he was living at 327 German Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). He was a policeman (24).

In 1875, he was living at 327 German Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). He was a conductor (24).

In 1876, he was living at 327 German Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). He was a watchman (24).

In 1877, he was living at 327 German Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24). This is the last time he appears in the Philadelphia directories (24).

In 1880, his widow [sic], Louisa Stotsenberg, was living at 715 Moss Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). She was living with her son Harry and daughter Blanche, along with Barbara, John, and Mary Losch (17).

According to the "pension index by unit" cards, he died on 3 September 1888 (14). But he last appears in the Philadelphia city directories in 1877, and Louisa appears as his widow beginning in 1884, and she is listed in the 1880 census as a widow (14). I therefore suspect he died before 1880.

By 1884, his widow, Louisa, was living at 715 Moss Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (24).

In 1890, his widow, Louisa Stotsenberg, was living at 715 Moss Street, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 11). At least three other people were living there: Harry and John H Stotsenburg (both barbers), and Jacob Schadel (a finisher) (11).

On 31 July 1890, his widow, Louisa Stotsenberg, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (12, 14).

She continued to live at 715 Moss Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, through at least 1896 (24).

In 1900, his widow, Louisa, was living at 633 Morris Street, ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (18). She was living with her children John and Laurence and grandson John (18).

In 1910, his widow, Louisa, was living at 425 South 20th Street, ward 7, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (19). She was living with her son John and his family, along with others (19).

On 17 September 1917, his widow, Louisa Stotsenburg, died (16). She was buried at Fernwood Cemetery (16). The funeral was held from her late residence, 2223 N Woodstock Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16).

selection from mother's application for pension

[page 2 of application of mother for pension, no. 76000, in Navy widows' certificates; the form is dated 14 October 1870]
[transcribed 16 March 2011, from Footnote]
[I transcribed only the statement that mentions Philip; other pages have more information about Margaret, her husband John, and her son John]

Also personally appeared Elizabeth Stack and Caroline Walting Residents of Philadelphia in the County of Philadelphia State of Pennsylvania persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw Margaret Stotsenburg make her mark to the foregoing declaration, and they further swear that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of the applicant and their acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be, and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim; that they have each known claimant respectively Sixteen and Fourteen years, and know her deceased son Ten and Eight years and who died unmarried and without issue that John Stotsenburg the father of said Seaman died at Franklinville NJ on February 2d 1869, and that for a period of Six years preceding his death was physically unable to support claimant, that claimant has not remarried since his death.

That claimant never did at any time own any real estate, or [sic] did her said husband, during the period of their acquaintance; nor during said time had they a direct or indirect interest in any property; or have any resources of any kind except that gained by hard labor, and the contributions of said soldier while alive.

That claimant's husband was 67 years of age when he died, he was a moulder by trade, that in the early part of May 1863, he was taken very ill and from that time until he died he was totally unable to work at anything and earned nothing during said time, that for a period of two years prior to May 1863 he worked for Messrs Morris + Tarkin [?] or Philad and earned $10 per week but about one third of said period he was unable to work, on account of physical inability at times and a breaking down of his vital powers.

That claimant has Five children living at the present time, and that is all - viz

(1) Charles aged 38 married - resides in Kensington Phila has not been able to contribute toward her support during the past eight years
(2) Anna E. married aged 42 has not been able to contribute towards her support during said period, she resides in Philada Pa
(3) Mary aged 37 resides in Philada is married and has not been able to contribute towards claimant's support during said period
(4) Margaret aged 34 resides at Philada Pa is married and has not been able to contribute towards claimant's support during said period.
(5) Philip aged 28 resides in Philada Pa is married for the past Eight years has not been able to contribute towards the support of claimant.

That her said deceased son was 24 years of age when he died that he always lived at home prior to the time he entered the Navy and claimant lived in Philada Pa during the whole time her said son contributed towards her support.
