91st PA: William H Strouse, later known as William Hart

William H Strouse (later known as William Hart)

Before the war

He was born in 1847, in Pennsylvania [sources: date: 2 (18-1/2 in 1865), 3 (18 in 1865), 8 (43 in 1880), 14 (18-6/12 in 1865). place: 2, 3, 8,, 14]

On 24 June 1864, he married Maria E Powers. She was born on 3 September 1848, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. They apparently had at least these children:

[sources: 7 (1 child, alive in 1900), 8, 14]

When he enlisted, he was a clerk. [sources: 2, 3, 14]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. [sources: 2, 3, 14]

During the war

He was a substitute for W Laughner. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 16 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, by Cathburton, at New Brighton. He was a private in company K. His service was credited to the 68th subdivision of the 24th congressional district. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 12, 14 (for Marcellus Lawson, Donegal Twp, Washington Cty PA)]

In June 1865, he was detailed as Brigade Clerk. [sources: 6, 14]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company K. [sources: 1, 4, 12]

After the war

Based on their children's birthplaces, they moved from Pennsylvania to West Virginia some time between 1866 and 1874. [source: 8]

About 1878, he disappeared from Moundsville, West Virginia. [sources: 4, 14]

He may be the William Strauss, living near Moundsville, who built a new steam flour mill on Market Street, in 1879. [sources: 9, 10]

In 1880, he was living in Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. He was living with his wife Marie and children Leonard, Harry, William, and Hester. He was a carpenter. [source: 8]

In March 1882, Harry Strauss--presumably his son--and Wylie Catlets tried to run away from home. They made it onto an empty box car on the B & O Railroad, but were caught at Bellaire, West Virginia, and sent home. [source: 11]

In 1900, his wife, Marie Strauss, was living in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. She was living with her son Harry and his wife. [source: 7]

On 10 January 1921, his widow, Maria E Strauss, applied successfully from West Virginia for a pension, under the Act of 1 May 1920. Her address was 752 Main Street, Wheeling, West Virginia. She received $30 per month. The certificate was dated 22 January 1923. [sources: 4, 5, 13, 14]

Effective 4 August 1926, Maria's pension was increased to $50 per month, under the Act of 3 July 1926. [sources: 13, 14]

On 11 January 1927, William's widow, Maria E Strauss, died. She was bured in Mount View Cemetery, Dallas, Marshall County, West Virginia. [sources: 13, 14, 15]

According to a note on the pension index card, he was alive on 10 August 38 (presumably 1938) (4, 5 [10 May 1911]).
