On 24 June 1864, he married Maria E Powers. She was born on 3 September 1848, in Washington County, Pennsylvania. They apparently had at least these children:

He may be the William Strauss, living near Moundsville, who built a new steam flour mill on Market Street, in 1879. [sources: 9, 10]
In 1880, he was living in Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. He was living with his wife Marie and children Leonard, Harry, William, and Hester. He was a carpenter. [source: 8]
In March 1882, Harry Strauss--presumably his son--and Wylie Catlets tried to run away from home. They made it onto an empty box car on the B & O Railroad, but were caught at Bellaire, West Virginia, and sent home. [source: 11]
In 1900, his wife, Marie Strauss, was living in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. She was living with her son Harry and his wife. [source: 7]
On 10 January 1921, his widow, Maria E Strauss, applied successfully from West Virginia for a pension, under the Act of 1 May 1920. Her address was 752 Main Street, Wheeling, West Virginia. She received $30 per month. The certificate was dated 22 January 1923. [sources: 4, 5, 13, 14]
Effective 4 August 1926, Maria's pension was increased to $50 per month, under the Act of 3 July 1926. [sources: 13, 14]
On 11 January 1927, William's widow, Maria E Strauss, died. She was bured in Mount View Cemetery, Dallas, Marshall County, West Virginia. [sources: 13, 14, 15]

WE learn that Mr. William Strauss, who lives near Moundsville, is contemplating the erection of a new flouring mill on Market street, Upper Town.
W. H. Strauss is rapidly pushing the work on his new steam mill, in the upper ward, and expects to be ready for operation by the first of October.
Harry Strauss and Wylie Catlets, two "kids" from Moundsville, were taken from an empty box car on the B. & O. yesterday and sent back home by Detective Roeder. The boys were running away.

On this 7" day of January, A.D. one thousand nine hundred and 21 personally appeared before me, a Clerk of County Court within and for the County and State aforesaid, Maria E Strouse Who, being duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain a pension, under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved April 19, 1908, amended September 8, 1916, amended May 1st 1920 declares that she is 72 years of age, that she was born Sept. 3d, 1848, at Washington County Pa
The [sic] she is the widow of William H. Strouse, who was enrolled under the name of Wm H. Strouse (Strause or Strauss) on the about [blank] day of March, 1865, as a Private in Co. [blank] probably 85 or 87 Reg't Pa Inft Vols., and honorably discharged about July 1865, having served ninety days or more during the late Civil War.
That she was married under the name of Maria E. Powers to said soldier near Burnsville Pa on the 24" day of June, 1864, by Squire Baker McGuire; that there was no legal barrier to the marriage; that she had not been previously married; That the soldier had not been previously married that neither she nor the said soldier married otherwise than as stated above.
That the said soldier died Left about 1878, at Moundsville West Va that she was not divorced from him; that she has not remarried since his death.
That the said soldier left the following-named children who are now living and under 16 years of age, to wit: [blank]
That she has not heretofore applied for pension See enclosed Letter from Pension Department
That she hereby appoints with full power of substitution. and revocation W. W. Rogers. P.O. Box 589 of Wheeling West Va her true and lawful attorney, to prosecute this claim.
