When he enlisted, he was a paperh[anger] (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (4).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 17 September 1861 (1, 2, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Smith (4). He was mustered in as third corporal in company G (2, 9).

He was discharged at Alexandria, Virginia, on 3 October 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability, by order of General Wadsworth (1, 2, 3, 4). He was a corporal in company G (1, 9).

After the war

In 1871/2, he married Sarah P [unknown surname] (6). In 1900, she had had five children, four of whom were alive (6).

In 1890, he was living at 1611 Edgely Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7).

On 3 February 1899, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (5, 8).

In 1900, he was living at 1357 Seltzer Street, ward 37, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6). He was a house painter (6). He was living with his wife Sarah, daughters Emma Sanders, Blanche, Amanda, and Gertrude, and two granddaughters (6).

He died on 16 August 1902 (8).

On 30 August 1905, his widow, Sallie P Sunderland, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (5, 8).
