Before the war

He was born on 15 April 1849 (5, 6; 2 (16 in 1865), 3 (16 in 1865), 7 (10 in 1860), 8 (2 in 1850), 9 (32 in 1880), 10 (61 in 1910)). He was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania (2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). He was born to George Swank and Catherine Hauck (6).

In 1850, he was living in Rain Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his parents, George and Catharine Swank, and various other Swanks (8).

In 1860, he was living in Rayne Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his parents, George and Catharine Swank, and others (presumably siblings) (7). He had attended school in the previous year (7).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (2, 3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (2, 3).

During the war

He was a substitute for C Long (1, 2, 3). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 8 March 1865 (1, 2, 3). He was enlisted for one year, at Greensburg, Pennsylvania, by W B Coulter (2, 3). He was a private in company K (1 13). His service was credited to the 22nd subdivision of the 21st congressional district (2, 3).

On 30 April 1865, he was reported absent sick (12).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1). He was a private, in company K (13).

After the war

On 11 November 1870, he married Mary Jane Weaver (5, 6, 10). They had one child, who was alive in 1910 (5, 6, 10):

In 1880, he was living in Bear Creek Township, Montgomery County, Missouri (9). He was living with his wife Mary J, his son Edgar, and a nephew (9). He was a farmer (9).

In 1900, he was living in Newcrest [?] Township, Montgomery County, Missouri (5). He was living with his wife Mary, son Edgar, and a laborer (5). He was a farmer (5).

On 15 April 1909, he applied successfully from Missouri for a pension (4, 11).

In 1910, he was living in Bear Creek Township, Montgomery County, Missouri (10). He was living with his wife Mary J (10). He was a farmer on a general farm (10).

He died on 13 November 1914, in Liberty, Clay County, Missouri (6, 11).

On 5 December 1914, his widow, Mary J Swank, applied successfully from Missouri for a pension (4, 11).

She died on 7 June 1918, in Liberty, Clay County, Missouri (6).
