When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. [sources: 3, 4 (hair dark or black)]

During the war

He was a substitute for Benjamin Shollenberger (30th subdistrict, 8th congressional district). He enlisted and was mustered into service for three years in company E on 21 March 1865, at Reading, Pennsylvania. He was enlisted and mustered into service by Captain Darell. [sources: 1, 3, 4-5]

On 25 March 1865, he was listed on a Muster and Descriptive Roll of a Detachment of Drafted Men and Substitutes forwarded for the 91st Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 4]

He deserted on 25 April 1865, "on the campaign". He was a private, in company E. [sources: 1, 2--Bates (1) has 26 April, 4-5]
